ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/17/07)-- Junior All-American Maria Bye struck out 13 and allowed no hits and one walk in seven innings on the day as No. 1-ranked St. Thomas (30-2 overall, 14-0 MIAC) won two games from visiting Concordia-Moorhead (8-12, 6-4 in MIAC softball Tuesday in St. Paul. UST won 10-3 and 9-1 (five innings).
Senior All-American Carrie Embree went 3-for-4 in the opener with two RBI and moved to 201 career hits. Kaity Wightman had three hits on the day.
Bye retired all nine batters she faced in game one with seven strikeouts. She set down 12 of the 14 she faced in game two with one walk and six strikeouts, as one reached on an error. Bye has not allowed an earned run in 46 innings in conference play.
The Toms ran their season win streak to 24 and their MIAC win streak to 21 as they outhit the Cobbers 22-4 on the day. Fourteen different Toms had at least one hit on the day. UST used a six-run inning to build a 9-0 lead in the opener, and scored eight runs in the first inning of game two.
Concordia had four different players accumulate hits on the day. Kelli Niess and Emily Jensen had base hits in the opener and Maddie Haroldson and Erin Johnson came through with singles in the nightcap. Niess scored two of the three runs in the first game, while Amanda Michaelson was credited with the lone RBI in the contest.
One of the bright spots for the Cobbers on the day was the pitching of freshman Erin Johnson. Johnson relieved Jill Reinert in both games. She threw a total of 6.0 innings against the top team in the land and allowed only two earned runs and seven hits. Johnson lowered her season ERA to team-best 3.63.
Concordia will look to start another winning streak when they host Macalester on Thursday, Apr. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
