MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/14/07)-- For the third straight doubleheader a Concordia school record was broken. Kelli Niess knocked out a single in the first inning of the first game against St. Olaf to capture the program record for hits in a career and CC took off from there as they swept the Oles 8-0 (5), 6-5 (10). The sweep is the first of the season for the Cobbers and pushes the team into third place in the MIAC standings. Concordia is now 4-2 in league play and 6-10 overall.
Niess' record-breaking performance wasn't the only dramatics in the opener for Concordia. Sophomore pitcher Jill Reinert, fresh off her MIAC Pitcher of the Week honor, threw her first collegiate no-hitter as she shut down the St. Olaf attack for the five innings in the game shortened due to the eight-run rule. Reinert allowed only two walks in the game and struck out a pair as well. She upped her season record to 5-7 and lowered her ERA to 5.02.
The Cobbers jumped on the Ole pitching staff right away in the opener as they scored two runs in each of the first two innings and then followed that with a lone run in the third. The final blow of the game came in the fifth inning when CC scored three times to put an end to the contest with no one out in the inning.
Catcher Shantelle Nogowski continued her hot hand at the plate in the first game. She went 3-for-3 with a home run, scored three runs and drove in three runs. Her solo home run in the third inning was the first of the season and her second career round tripper. The three hits marked the third straight game that Nogowski has had at least two hits in the contest.
Four other players had at least two hits in the opener as Concordia outhit the Oles
14-0. Niess, Amanda Michaelson, Amanda Johnson and Laura Johnson all had two hits each in the five-inning win.
It was the Lisa Kott show in the second game of the twinbill. The senior pitcher/outfielder pitched six strong innings in relief to pick up her first win of the year and hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning that jump-started Concordia's comeback after falling behind St. Olaf 5-2 in the top of the inning.
Concordia had taken an early 2-0 lead before St. Olaf (2-13/0-4 MIAC) rallied to score
three runs in the fourth inning and then two more in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. After the Cobbers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, the teams traded scoreless frames until the 10th inning when Niess singles up the middle to score Kylene Compton from third base who was placed on second to start the inning due to the international rule.
Kott finished the second game 2-for-5 with two RBI's and one scored. On the mound, she gave up only two earned runs and four hits while striking out three in her six innings of work.
Niess and Laura Johnson had their second straight multiple-hit game. Both players had three hits as once again the Cobbers posted 14 hits in the game. Niess went 3-for-5 in the nightcap and 5-for-8 for the series. She now has 138 career hits, which surpasses the old mark of 133 set by Cindy Frey (1997-00). She also upped her team-high batting average to .419 on the year.
Concordia will continue their busy schedule by hosting Augsburg on Sunday, Apr. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
