SJU Invitational Meet Recap
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (4/04/06)-- A duo of freshmen competing in their very first collegiate track and field meet posted a pair of impressive results at the outdoor season opener at the St. John's Invitational in Collegeville, Minn. on Saturday. As a team, the Cobbers finished with a team total of 28.5 points and placed seventh in a field of 12 teams. St. John's won the event with a final score of 251.0.
Thomas Flynn and Preston Lyles burst onto the track and field scene by recording top five finishes in the javelin and discus. Flynn won the javelin with a toss of 166-2. His winning mark was over nine feet past the second place distance. Lyles, becoming a rare three-sport athlete at Concordia after participating in football and wrestling, finished fifth in the discus with a distance of 122-4.
Other top six finishes for the Cobbers included Josh Smith, who finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 51.44 and Billy Oehlers who placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of
44-4.75. The Cobber 4x100-meter relay team also placed fourth in a time of 45.82.
Concordia will continue their early outdoor
schedule when they compete at the NDSU Invitational on Apr. 8 at 1:00pm.
