MIAC Championship Meet Recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/13/06)-- The Concordia field athletes put on their best performance of the season as they scored 29 of the Cobbers' 40 total points and helped the team to an eighth place finish at the MIAC Championship Meet held at the University of St. Thomas. It is the second straight season they have finished eighth at the conference outdoor meet.

Freshman Tom Flynn recorded the top Concordia finish of the meet, placing second in the javelin with a toss of 167-8. Teammate Nick Birchem finished fourth in the javelin with a distance of 157-6. The 2-4 finish in the javelin represented the only time the Cobbers placed two athletes in the top five of an event.

Billy Oehlers carried on the tradition of freshman field athletes leading the charge as he recorded a fourth-place finish in the shot put. Oehlers continued his steady inaugural collegiate season by posting a distance of

47-5.75 which was just shy of his personal best.

Preston Lyles, another promising Cobber freshman, finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 137-8.

Concordia also placed two athletes in the top eight in the long jump. Junior Dusten Olejnicak recorded a final distance of 20-10.75 and finished sixth, and sophomore Josh Smith ended up eighth with a mark of 20-6.50.

Smith was the only Cobber track athlete to record an individual point. He posted a season-best time of 50.12 in the 400 meters and finished fifth.

Smith was also a member of the Concordia 4x400-meter relay team that finished third to round out the scoring for the team at the championship meet. Smith was joined by Olejnicak, Josh Haddeland and Jay Prince as they ran a 3:22.88.
