MIAC Decathlon Recap

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/05/06)-- It was supposed to be another stepping stone for one Cobber multi-event athlete and just a get acquainted session for another. In the end it turned out to be a surprisingly solid meet for decathlon newcomer Alonzo Jalan and a disappointment for rising multi-event star David Pettit.

Jalan stole the story line from Pettit as he finished seventh in his very first MIAC decathlon event. Pettit, who finished sixth at last year's decathlon and climbed to second in the indoor heptathlon this year, failed to post a height in the pole vault and tumbled back to 10th place.

Jalan used the strength of his field skills to finish in the top ten with a final score of 5,270 points. He posted the best mark in the competition in the javelin (151-10) and had the second-best mark in the discus (117-0) and third-best in the shot put (34-11.25). He was hindered by his marks in the pole vault and long jump. All told, he placed in the top three in six of the ten events in the competition.

Pettit stumbled in the pole vault after finishing with the second-best marks in the long jump, high jump and 110-meter hurdles. He finished with a final score of 5,029. If he would have posted the same height in the pole vault that he did last year (8-6.25), he would have scored 264 more points and bumped Jalan for seventh place.

Concordia's complete team will compete at the Ron Masanz Invitational on Saturday, May 6 at 9:00am.
