MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/31/09)-- Concordia answered the sound of the starter's pistol on Saturday and they are now off and running in the 2010 indoor track and field season. CC hosted the annual Cobber Open in the Olson Forum and produced one event win and several top 6 finishes.

Concordia junior Tom Sederquist won the 5000 meters, kick-started his campaign to become one of the top distance runners in the MIAC and earn a spot at the NCAA National Meet. Sederquist clocked a time of 15:12.96 and won the event by almost a full two seconds over a field of NCAA DII and NAIA athletes. Sederquist's time is the best in the MIAC this season. It is also 19.96 away from earning this year's national provisional mark.

The Cobbers had five other athletes post top 6 finishes at the meet. Leading the way was sophomore Tom Mammen who earned a pair of sixth-place honors. He recorded a height of 5-6.50 in the high jump and also was sixth in the 55 meters with a time of 6.76.

Dan Thorson also had a height of 5-6.50 in the high jump but finished fifth because of fewer misses on earlier heights. Thorson's best performance of the afternoon came in the pole vault where he cleared 13-03.00 and finished seventh. That height is a personal best and is the fourth best in the conference this season.

Luke Hvidston rounds out the top 6 finishes for the field athletes. Hvidston had a distance of 20-08.00 in the long jump and placed sixth. That is the second farthest jump in the MIAC this year.

Paul Lillehaugen and Ben Ehlers led the way for the Cobber track crew. Both athletes claimed top 6 honors in the 1000 meters. Lillehaugen raced to a 2:44.45 and was fifth while Ehlers was close behind at 2:48.91 and earned a sixth-place finish.

Concordia will stay at home and host the Cobber Duals meet on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Olson Forum.
