(2/06/09)-- Concordia continued their 2009 season by competing at the Bison Open on Friday and Saturday. The Cobbers once again posted several individual successful results. For the second straight weekend senior Paul Westmark stole the show. A week after provisionally qualifying for nationals in the pentathlon, Westmark posted a score of 4,700 points in the heptathlon and broke his own school record. Not only did Westmark post a career mark in the overall competition but he also PR'ed in several events in the event. The biggest surprise for Westmark came in the pole vault where he posted a height of 13-3.50. That mark is far and above his previous best and currently ranks him 11th in the MIAC in the event. Besides the pole vault, Westmark also set personal bests in the 60 meters (7.58) and the 1000 meters (2:41.54). Joining Westmark in posting career point totals in the heptathlon was junior Marly Simmons. Simmons finished seventh in the event with a final total of 4,231 points. Two other Cobber athletes posted top-flight marks in the regular Bison Open Meet. Senior Billy Oehlers gave an early indication of what his final season could be like when he tossed the shot put 49-10.50. That is his second-best mark ever in the event and currently places him second in the MIAC. Head coach Garrick Larson summed up Oehlers performance by saying, "big Billy honked the ball out of the park on that toss!" Sophomore Tom Sederquist set a lifetime best in the mile at the Bison Open. Sederquist, who was the Cobbers' top cross country runner in the fall, recorded a time of 4:25.18 and finished sixth. Sederquist also ran a 2:04.11 in the 800 meters. The only other Cobber athlete to finish in the top 10 of the meet was Felix Okoth who posted a distance of 41-07.75 in the triple jump and finished eighth. Concordia will continue their trek towards the MIAC Championship when they compete at the St. John's Duals on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.
