Meet Recap:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/10/08)-- Concordia used a record-setting relay to post their best finish at an MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet since the 2001 season. The Cobbers broke the school record in the 4x100-meter relay on their way to placing fifth at the conference meet. That is the highest finish since CC came in fourth place back in 2001. Their final point total of 78.0 points is the highest since the 2001 campaign as well.

The highlight of the meet for the Cobbers came in the 4x100-meter relay where the quartet of Jason Sather, Perry Patterson, Jeff Bakke, Xavier Carroll broke the school record not once, but twice en route to posting a second-place finish in the event. The fast four set a new school record in the prelims on Friday with a time of 42.79 and then bettered the mark on Saturday by racing to a 42.43 in the finals. Those times broke the old school mark of 42.90 set back in 1998.

That relay was one of three second-place finishes for the Cobbers at the meet. The other two came in field events where Concordia came up with a majority of their points. Freshman Giles Henry uncorked a throw of 147-02 in the discus to finish second. That distance is a season best and tied for the 11th best in school history. Tom Flynn posted his second runner-up finish in the javelin in the past three years. He recorded a distance of 175-01 at the MIAC Meet.

The javelin was the best individual event for CC as they posted second, sixth and seventh-place finishes. Besides Flynn, Bakke finished sixth with a mark of 166-07 and Nick Birchem placed seventh with a throw of  162-04. Birchem also finished seventh in the discus with a distance of 134-05 and eighth in the shot put with a mark of 46-0.

Paul Westmark capped an outstanding conference meet by finishing in the top eight in the 400-meter hurdles and the triple jump. A week after winning the MIAC decathlon, Westmark placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles and eighth in the triple jump.

The Concordia track crew was led by Xavier Carroll who was the anchor leg on the record-setting relay team and then also placed fourth in the 200 meters and ninth in the 100 meters. His time of 22.77 in the 200 meters is the 10th fastest in program history. Although he finished ninth in the 100 meters, he did post a qualifying time of 11.18 which is the eighth fastest in program history.

Senior Josh Smith finished off his conference career by recording a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters. Nursing a sore leg, Smith gutted out a 48.87 in the finals. That time is a personal best and the second fastest in school history.

Because of the injury, Smith was unable to compete in the meet-ending 4x400-meter relay which could have given Concordia a fourth-place finish as a team.

Dusten Olejnicak ended his super senior season by recording another 22-foot jump in the long jump. He had a final distance of 22-0.75 and placed fifth.

The other fifth-place finish at the meet came from Billy Oehlers who posted a distance of 49-08.25 in the shot put.

The only other athlete to score points in the meet was Perry Patterson who finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.25.
