(3/3/07)-- The top two storylines for the Concordia men's track and field team continued their season-long success tale as the Cobbers finished eighth at the MIAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Meet held at St. Olaf on Saturday. It is the second consecutive season that the Cobbers have placed eighth at the conference indoor meet. As with most of the indoor meets in 2007, junior Josh Smith and the 4x400-meter relay team stole the show. Smith won the 600-yard dash by a scant .04 seconds. Smith's time of 1:13.71 is the second fastest time in school history in the event and is only .09 slower than the school record of 1:13.62 set by Collin Beachy in 1992. Smith also earned all-conference honorable mention honors in the 400 meters by placing fifth in a time of 51.20, which is the seventh fastest in school history. The Cobber 4x400-meter relay team of Dusten Olejnicak, Paul Westmark, Josh Haddeland and Smith culminated their indoor campaign by running a 3:24.86 to break the 18-year-old school record of 3:26.69 set by Rob Nick, Matt Raml, Darren McKigney and Micah Benson in 1999. The current CC relay team finished sixth in the event to earn MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. Freshman Nick Meseck was the one of only two other Concordia athletes to earn MIAC All-Conference honors for finishing in the top three in an event. Meseck capped his initial collegiate indoor season by finishing second in the high jump. Meseck cleared the first three heights he jumped at and finished with a mark of 6-2.75. Meseck also finished seventh in the triple jump with a final distance of 42-0.50. One of the most dramatic finishes of the meet came in the shot put where CC sophomore Billy Oehlers earned a spot in the finals of the event bettered his prelim distance by over four feet in the finals. His mark of 49.0-25 put him in the lead with four athletes to go in the final round of the competition. After the first competitor failed to better Oehlers, the final two athletes were able to record distances ahead of Oehlers. The third-place finish earns him his first MIAC All-Conference award in his career. Oehler's final distance is the seventh best in the history of the Cobbers men's program. Westmark was the final member of Concordia to finish in the top six and earn all-conference honorable mention honors. Westmark posted a final score of 4163 in the heptathlon and finished in sixth place. His final total set a new school record. The heptathlon was added to the men's indoor track and field schedule in 2004.
