Meet Recap:

NEW YORK, N.Y. (2/23/07)-- Josh Smith had been close to setting the school record in the 400 meters the entire indoor season. He just wanted to wait until getting to the grandest arena the Cobbers would compete in before finally accomplishing the feat.

Smith ran a 50.49 in the ninth section of the event to break the old school mark of 50.67 set by Kyle Odermann in 1994. Smith's previous best this season was a 51.56 he ran at the St. John's Triangular on Feb. 10. Smith's time is the second fastest run in the MIAC this year.

Besides Smith's impressive feat on the banked track at the Armory Track, the Cobber 4x400-meter relay team also continues to cut seconds off their season-best times as they prepare for the MIAC Indoor Meet next weekend. On Friday, the team of Dusten Olejnicak, Josh Haddeland, Rocky Jantzen and Smith posted a time of 3:27.45 which is almost .50 seconds faster than the team's previous best of 3:28.16 set at the Bison Classic last weekend. Their time is currently the fourth best in the conference.

Jantzen also turned in an impressive performance in the 1000 meters. He blazed to a season-best 2:41.77 which is the best time of any Cobber in that event this year.

Matt Putratz also took a liking to the Armory Track. Racing in the 3000 meters, he ran a 9:06.51 which is the fastest time of the season for Putratz and best by any CC athlete this season.

In field events, Olejnicak bested his season-best mark in the long jump with a mark of 20-10.75. That beat his previous best by only .25 inches and is the fifth best distance in the MIAC this year.

Nick Birchem bettered his season-best in the shot put with a heave of 45-01.50 which was good enough for a 13th-place finish - the highest of any Cobber at the meet.

Concordia will now enjoy the sights of New York as they prepare for the MIAC Conference Indoor Meet on Mar. 2-3 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
