(2/03/07)-- On a weekend that was as cold as the February temperatures for Cobber athletics, the Concordia men's track and field team burned up the Olson Forum in posting a perfect 5-0 record en route to capturing the Cobber Duals team title. The team win is the first meet victory since Concordia claimed title in the Concordia Invitational Indoor Meet in 2001. The Cobbers beat Division II rival MSU Moorhead 94-87 in the closest dual of the afternoon. They also posted wins over UM-Morris, Jamestown College, University of Mary and a reserve team from North Dakota State University. Concordia had two relay teams and one individual capture events wins. The 4x400-meter relay team of Josh Haddeland (Jr., Waubun, Minn.), Paul Westmark (So., Appleton, Wis.), Justin Shobe (So., Lewiston, Mont/Fergus HS) and Josh Smith (Jr., Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) recorded a time of 3:29.73 to win the race by a full five seconds. The distance medley relay team of Brandon Huether (So., Lisbon, N.D.), Paul Shol (So., Fergus Falls, Minn.), Rocky Jantzen (Jr., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) and Matt Putratz (Jr., Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) posted a time of 11:14.86 in winning the even by almost a full minute. Westmark went on to post the only individual event win in the meet. He ran a 1:24.94 in the 600 meters and won by almost four seconds. Josh Smith backed up his runner-up finish in the 600meters at last weekend's Concordia Invitational by finishing second in the 800 meters in a time of 2:00.16. The CC middle distance and distance corps came through in the clutch for Garrick Larson's squad. From the 400 meters to the mile run, Concordia athletes had six top five finishers. Besides Westmark and Smith, Haddeland finished fifth in the 400 meters, Alex Berg placed fourth in the 1000 meters, Matt Putratz was fifth in the mile run and senior Dan Bye had an outstanding race in the 3000 meters and finished second. Cobber freshman Nick Meseck (Madison, Minn./Lac Qui Parle Valley HS) recorded a pair of top four finishes in the triple jump and high jump. Meseck had a distance of 43-3 in the triple jump and finished fourth and topped 5-8.5 in the high jump to place third. Other top five finishes for CC included Dusten Olejnicak in the long jump (5th) and Billy Oehlers in the shot put (3rd). Concordia will hope to continue their early-season success when they compete at the St. John's Triangular meet on Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn.
