Meet Recap:

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/04/07)-- Paul Westmark and Paul Shol continued their flurry during the second day of competition in the MIAC Decathlon. Both Cobber athletes improved their overall position in the standings from the first day. Westmark moved up to fourth place and Shol came through with an eighth-place finish.

Westmark set personal bests in three of the five events in the second day including his win in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:27.31. Westmark also had a personal best in the pole vault by clearing 12-5.50. Westmark's final score of 5,806 points moved him into the No.9 spot on Concordia's all-time decathlon list.

Like Westmark, Shol also  set personal bests in three of the five events on the final day. His biggest impact came in the javelin where he recorded a distance of 146-8.00 to record the best mark in the competition. Shol also had a huge day in the pole vault by upping his personal best by almost one and a half feet. Shol's pole vault and javelin put him within striking distance of the top eight places heading into the final event.

In the 1500 meters, Shol exchanged leads with Westmark and St. John's runner Jeff Doll during the race to blaze to a 4:27.83 - just off Westmark's shoulder at the line. The race gave Shol a final total of 5,581 points. That was a narrow 37-point margin over Kane Bechstein of Carleton who finished in ninth place. He almost caught seventh-place place finisher Drew Hood of Gustavus, who finished just 17 points ahead of Shol with a total of 5,598 points.
