Matchday Match Recap
MOORHEAD, Minn.-- Anyone arriving late to Concordia's match with the University of Mary on Wednesday at Olson Forum would have missed all three doubles matches and might have missed most of the singles action.
The Cobbers lost only one game in the three doubles matches against the Marauders and breezed to an 8-1 victory. It is the third straight 8-1 victory in a row for Concordia and fourth consecutive overall victory. After starting the season 0-3, the Cobbers have now rebounded to push their record above the .500 mark for the first time all season.
The University of Mary falls short in their first match of the 2006 season and stumbles to 0-1.
The three Cobbers doubles teams have settled into a nice rhythm after struggling in the first part of the year. The #1 doubles team of Jordy Kamerling and William Wischer continue to dominate their opponents after getting over the newlywed period. Kamerling and Wischer shutout their opponent 8-0 and are now 6-1 on the season. The #2 doubles team of Ryan Smith and Kevin Goihl dropped the only game in doubles for the Cobbers as they won 8-1. The tandem is a perfect 3-0 since being teamed with each other in the second spot. The #3 doubles team of Eric Torres and Paul Tuchscherer also remained unbeaten as they ran their record to 4-0 with an 8-0 win.
Cobber head coach Dave Lester shuffled the lineup in singles play to allow eight of the nine players on the team to play in the match. Wischer moved up to the #1 singles position and finished his perfect night with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing. Tuchscherer, who has steadily improved since returning from a hand injury, gained a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #2 singles. Tuchscherer has not lost in singles or doubles since coming back into the lineup. He is now 5-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles.
Goihl blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles and Torres did likewise at #4 singles. Torres has mirrored the Cobber team success. After dropping his first three matches of the season, he has reeled off four straight.
Freshman Dave Nygaard, making only his third appearance in the Cobber top squad, made the most of his opportunity by claiming a straight set 6-1, 6-3 win.
Arnold Andreasen improved throughout his match at #6 singles but was unable to overcome a 6-0 first-set hole and lost 6-0, 6-4.
Concordia returns to MIAC
action when they host Macalester on Friday, Mar. 24 at 7:00pm in the Olson Forum.
