Matchday Match Recap

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- It's been almost a full month since Concordia pulled off one of the biggest wins in men's tennis recent history by beating St. Thomas 5-4. On Sunday, the Cobbers showed no signs of an extended layoff as they cruised past St. Mary's 8-1 in a match played in St. Cloud, Minn.

The victory is the second straight for the Cobbers and evens their MIAC record at 2-2. Concordia is now 2-3 overall. St. Mary's falls to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The three doubles teams set the tone for the Cobbers as they all picked up wins in convincing fashion. The #1 doubles team of Jordy Kamerling and William Wischer ran their record to 4-1 by taking an 8-6 decision from Tony Miller and Brian Robinson. The tandems of Ryan Smith and Kevin Goihl and Paul Tuchscherer and Eric Torres followed suit by earning 8-5 and 8-6 victories respectively.

In singles play, Kamerling continued to prove why he is the #1 player on the team as he ground out a superset victory over Stevenson. Kamerling is now 2-3 on the year but has won two straight matches.

After Wischer suffered a 7-6, 6-2 defeat at #2 singles. The four remaining singles players for the Cobbers all picked up much-needed wins. Eric Torres scored the most lopsided win of the match as he won 6-1, 6-2 over Thomas Vollman at #5 singles.

Paul Tuchscherer, playing in only his third match since returning from an injury, ran his record to a perfect 3-0 in singles competition as he beat Adam Solseth 6-4, 6-2 at #4 singles.

Ryan Smith grabbed a 6-1, 7-6 win at #3 singles and Kevin Goihl rounded out the victory by winning 7-5, 6-2 at the #6 singles.

Concordia will host St. Olaf on Saturday, Mar. 18 at 6:00pm at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
