Matchday Match Recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Entering their match with St. Thomas, there was no sign that Concordia would pull off one of the biggest wins in program history in recent years. The Cobbers were coming off an 8-1 loss at the hands of Carleton and had not won a match all season.

That all changed in the course of two hours, as the Cobber singles crew won four of the six matches and Concordia pulled off the improbable 5-4 win over the Tommies in St. Paul.

The victory marks the first win over St. Thomas by a Concordia men's tennis team since the 1980's, a streak that goes back over 17 matches. The win is also the Cobbers' first of the year and moves their overall record to 1-3 on the season in overall matches and 1-2 in conference play.

St. Thomas falls to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the MIAC.

Early on, the match appeared to be heading in the direction of the past 18 years as the Tommies grabbed two of the three doubles matches and looked to be cruising to another win over the Cobbers. The only victory in doubles came at the #1 spot where Jordy Kamerling and William Wischer won a nail-biting 9-7 decision. The win improved the top Cobber doubles teams' record to an impressive 3-1.

Kamerling then spearheaded the singles charge by winning his match at #1 singles 6-3, 6-4.

Inspired by the play of their #1 player, Concordia went on a roll that saw three of the next five matches fall in favor of the Cobbers.

Wischer, playing at #2 singles, won his match 6-4, 6-4. That was followed by one of the biggest surprises of the day as senior Eric Torres pulled off a huge win at #4 singles. Torres, who last season had a 6-11 record playing at #6 singles, came away with a match-turning 6-4, 7-5 victory over Kevin Manzel.

Junior Paul Tuchscherer finished off the win for the Cobbers. Playing in only his second match of the season since returning from an injury, Tuchscherer scored a 6-3, 7-5 victory at #6 singles. The win completed Tuchscherer's perfect weekend as he scored Concordia's only victory in Saturday's 8-1 loss to Carleton.

The Cobbers will now have an extended break to savor their streak-breaking victory. Concordia will return to action on March 12 at noon when they play St. Mary's in St. Cloud, Minn.
