MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/16/07)-- Concordia senior men's tennis player Jordy Kamerling (Almere, The Netherlands/Moorhead HS) was named the recipient of this year's Arthur Ashe Award in the MIAC it was announced by the league office.

The Arthur Ashe Award is presented to a senior player who has demonstrated sportsmanship, high academic performance, tennis achievement and humanitarian concern. The award-winner needs to have a 3.0 GPA and have played on the team's varsity squad. The award is named after the late tennis icon Arthur Ashe who won the NCAA singles and doubles championships in 1965, the US Open singles title in 1968, the Australian Open singles championship in 1970 and the Wimbledon singles crown in 1975.

Kamerling becomes the third Concordia player to earn the prestigious honor and first since Dan Vandersteen won the award in 1987.

The award caps a stellar season for Kamerling. Earlier in the month he was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team for the first time in his career. Kamerling earned all-conference honors in both singles and doubles competition.

Kamerling led the team from his No.1 singles and doubles spot. He went 12-4 on the season and 7-2 in the  MIAC in singles play. Both win totals are career highs for Kamerling. His only two losses in the conference came in super-set tiebreakers. He finished his career with a 37-22 overall record.

Teaming with fellow senior Paul Tuchscherer as the team's No.1 doubles tandem, the pair went 8-7 overall and 5-4 in MIAC competition. It was the first season that the two singles stalwarts had been teamed as doubles partners.
