Match Recap:

FARGO, N.D. (1/26/08)-- Concordia showed no ill effects from losing three of their four top players from 2007 as they opened the 2008 season in perfect fashion by blanking Northwestern (Minn.) 9-0. It is the first shutout for the Cobbers since the 2005 season.

Concordia senior Wills Wischer filled the shoes of last year's No.1 singles player, and Arthur Ashe award-winner, Jordy Kamerling quite nicely as he did not drop a single game in either his double or singles match - a feat that Kamerling never accomplished in his four-year career.

Wischer teamed with freshman Matt Eiden to win the No.1 doubles match 8-0. Eiden then turned around and won 6-2, 6-1 at No.2 singles.

Sophomore Kirby Johnson, moving up in both doubles and singles from last year, won 7-5, 6-2 at No.3 singles and partnered with freshman Jordan Swanson to record an 8-3 win at No.2 doubles.

Swanson also won 6-1, 6-1 in his first collegiate singles match in the number four spot.

The only other double winner for the Cobbers was Andrew Tancabel. Tancabel was with Arnie Andreasen for an 8-1 win at No.3 doubles. He won the tightest singles match, edging out a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 5 singles.

A fourth Concordia freshman, Peter Zender, won 6-3, 6-0 at No.6 singles.

The Cobbers will head to Sartell, Minn. next weekend to play a trio of matches. CC will play UW-Eau Claire at Gold's Gym on Friday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. They will then play St. Scholastica on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. and turn around and face St. Cloud State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
