Gameday Game Recap

(recap by Mike Larson - Concordia SID assistant)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.-- Friday was a beautiful day in Florida for baseball, but a sloppy day in the field as Concordia defeated Point Park University (Pittsburgh, Penn.) 13-5.  The two teams combined to commit nine errors - six by newly arrived Point Park, who was making their 2006 season debut.

Freshman left-hander Joe Cox took the mound for the Pioneers and showed impressive stuff with a fastball that topped out at 87 mph and a sweeping curve breaking from ten to four.  Chris Klabo quickly welcomed Cox to college baseball with a two-out solo homerun in the first inning. Cox finished the second inning with Klabo’s homerun the only hit and having struck out three.

The Point Park defense could not help out their pitcher as things started to unravel quickly in the fifth inning.  An error by the third baseman put leadoff hitter Ryan Emter on first.  Billy DeNet followed with a single to put runners on first and second.  Brian Koublach, pinch hitting for Chris Klabo who left the game with a sore thumb, laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Brian Schumacher was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Matt Youngquist hit a taylor-made double play ball to second base but the fielder could not get a handle on it and everyone was safe.  Scott Halupczok followed with a sacrifice fly.  Kyle Johnson followed with the big hit in the inning, a two-run triple to straight away center field to put the Cobbers up 5-1.

The Cobbers added four more runs in the sixth, and two more each in the seventh and ninth.  Brian Schumacher tripled twice, including going back-to-back in triples with his little brother Scott Schumacher in the seventh.

Concordia (4-3) starting pitcher Blake Trenbeath controlled the entire game, allowing two earned runs (both on solo homeruns) over seven innings, striking out five and allowing zero walks for his second win of the season.

Shortstop Billy DeNet went three for five with a walk and scored three times.  DeNet leads the Cobbers in batting average at .435.   Chris Klabo extended his team-high hitting streak to four games.

Concordia’s next game is Saturday at 10:30 against Purdue-North Central.
