(recap by Mike Larson - Concordia SID assistant)
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.--
York College (Penn.) starting pitcher Brad McCullough dominated Concordia’s lineup Thursday afternoon thrusting the Spartans to a 5-0 win over the Cobbers.
McCullough pitched seven shutout innings while striking out nine, only getting into trouble once in the game. In his seventh and final inning, McCullough walked leadoff hitter Chris Klabo, then hit Brian Schumacher with a pitch. Zach Howland struck out swinging, and then McCullough walked pinch hitter Matt Youngquist. Brian Knoblauch lined out to centerfield and Andrew Zimmerman grounded out to keep the Cobbers at zero. Two York relievers combined to finish the shutout.
Concordia freshman Darrin Carlson made his first start for Concordia (3-3). After a 1-2-3 first inning, Carlson ran into trouble in the second when a two-out walk to Jed Vess came around to score on a single by Eric Valez. Carlson gave up two runs in the third, and another two in the fourth. Carlson left after five innings, allowing eight hits, five runs, four earned runs, and struck out two. Kevin Engebretson, Adam Padrnos, and Matt Venturini each pitched a shutout inning in relief.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the young lefthander Carlson, as he controlled the outer half of the plate all game. He kept Spartan number-three hitter Jeff Young hitless, and allowed only a bloop-single to number-four hitter Mike Welch, keeping him one for three. The first five hitters of the York line-up went three for twelve against Carlson. Carlson’s downfall was the slap hitters that waited on that outside pitch, the guys hitting sixth through ninth combined for five hits and a walk in eight at-bats.
Concordia finished the game with only two hits, a single by Chris Klabo in the first and a pinch-hit single by Scott Schumacher in the eighth.
The Cobbers play Friday at 11:00 ET against Point Park (Penn.).
