MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/17/06)-- Fans of the 2006 Concordia baseball team always get their money's worth. There is never a dull moment on the diamond for the Cobbers and especially not when they hook up with Valley City State.
On Monday the two teams got together in a series that took on the feel of a NASCAR race for the Cobbers. In the first game, Concordia crashed into the wall at full speed on the last lap after taking the white flag well in the lead. The Cobbers then had to use a Dale Earnhardt Jr.-like tailspin and recovery to avoid duplicating the feat in the second game.
Concordia allowed Valley City to score five runs in the top of the seventh inning in the opener to claim an 8-7 victory after the Cobbers were comfortably ahead 7-3 heading into the final frame. In the nightcap, tragedy almost struck again when the Vikings posted three runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4 after heading into the inning down 4-1. Luckily for Concordia, they were able to scratch out a run in the bottom half of the inning and come away with their fourth straight split and eighth in the last ninth doubleheader.
The Cobbers are now 12-14 on the season while the Vikings move to 12-20 on the year.
For the second series in succession, the wind played a major role in the series. The Cobbers and Vikings played both games with the wind gusting and swirling up to 25 mph directly in from the outfield. The pitcher's aid helped Concordia freshman starter Scott Schumacher hold Valley City to only two hits through the first four innings.
The two teams were tied heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when Concordia exploded, for what seemed like, a game-deciding four runs. In the inning, the Cobbers scored all four runs on four singles.
Concordia's brakes gave way in the top of the seventh inning when the Vikings used a dropped foul ball as the instigator to score five runs, four of which came after their were two outs in the inning. Matt Venturini relieved Schumacher after two batters and retired two of the first three batters he faced but was never able to get the crucial third out of the frame until after the Vikings had plated five runs.
The second game shaped up as a pitcher's duel from the start. Concordia sophomore pitcher Anthony Stern baffled the Vikings for the first six innings. Stern, another one of the Cobbers' young guns, continually worked out of jams through the first six innings and only allowed a single run heading into the seventh. Concordia took a three-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on two-run single by Scott Johnson.
Once again Concordia had a major mechanical malfunction coming down the backstretch with the lead well in hand. Instead of crashing into the wall on the final turn like they did in game 1, the Cobbers were able to spin out of the impending crash by scoring a lone run in the bottom of the seventh after the Vikings had tied the game in the top of the inning.
Valley City scored three in the seventh on four hits, two of which went for extra bases. Kevin Engebretson came on in relief and finally retired the Vikings to earn his second win of the season.
Concordia scored the winning run after a walk to catcher Michael Hinde. Andrew Zimmerman came on and was used as a pinch runner for Hinde. Zimmerman stole second base and then stole third on a clutch delayed steal opportunity. Appropriately enough, Concordia waited until there were two outs in the inning before scoring the winning run. Neil Manthe fought off a two-strike pitch and lofted the ball over the shortstop to score the winning run.
For the game, Valley City outhit Concordia 11-6. Manthe was the only Cobber player with more than one hit in the game. He went 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
In the opener, Ryan Emter led the eight-hit attack for Concordia. He was 3-for-4 in the game. Emter also extended his errorless streak to 38 games. He played in both games against the Vikings and fielded both of his chances cleanly.
Concordia will return to MIAC action when they host Gustavus on Wednesday, Apr. 19 at 1:00pm at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
