Concordia senior shortstop Billy DeNet was named the MIAC Player of the Week after hitting .667 last week.
DeNet Earns MIAC Honors!!

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/08/06)-- Concordia senior shortstop Billy DeNet (Eagan, Minn.) was named the MIAC Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.

It is the first Player of the Week award for DeNet in his career and he joins teammate Blake Trenbeath (Sr., Cavalier, N.D.) as the only Cobber players to earn the award this season.

DeNet hit .667 in six conference games last week in helping the Cobbers post a 5-1 record and go to the final game of the regular season before narrowly missing a chance at the playoffs. He went 14-for-21 from the leadoff spot in the batting order in the six Cobber games and recorded multiple hits in five of the six games during the week. He also did not make an error during the week as he fielded all 28 chances cleanly.

Against Carleton on Tuesday, he went 6-for-8 and collected two doubles. He followed that up with a 3-for-6 performance against Saint Mary's on Wednesday. In Saturday's playoff-deciding series against Hamline, he went 5-for-7 and scored a pair of runs. He also kept the second game alive in the seventh inning when there were two outs and the Cobbers needed a base runner to push the tying run to the plate.

DeNet's performance during the week allowed him to become the first player to hit .400 in a season since former MIAC MVP Derek Dormanen hit .440 in 2001. DeNet finished the year with a team-leading .418 average. He led the MIAC in hitting in conference games. His 14-for-21 stretch during the week helped him bat a league-best .485.
