Concordia seniors Billy DeNet and Brian Schumacher were named to the Rawlings/All-Midwest Region Team.
Two Cobbers Named All-Region!

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/24/06)--Concordia placed two senior standouts on the Rawlings/NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region First Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) it was announced on Wednesday. Shortstop Billy DeNet was placed on the All-Midwest Region First Team and third baseman Brian Schumacher earned All-Region Third Team honors.

The award follows both players being named to the MIAC All-Conference Team earlier in the month. It is the first All-Region award for DeNet and second consecutive for Schumacher. Last year Schumacher was placed on the All-Region Second Team.

DeNet becomes the first Concordia player to earn All-Region First Team honors since Derek Dormanen in 2003. DeNet is now eligible to be placed on one of the three All-American teams. Schumacher is also the first repeat All-Region award winner for the Cobbers since Dormanen capped his career with two All-Region awards. Concordia has now had eight players earn All-Region honors in the past four years.

DeNet and Scumacher were two of 17 players from the MIAC that made the three teams in the All-Midwest Region. DeNet was one of only six players from the conference that were named to the All-Region First Team.

The pair helped Concordia post a 20-17 overall record, the 12th 20-win season in the past 24 years and fourth in the past five seasons. The Cobbers finished conference play with an 11-9 mark, the eighth consecutive 10-plus conference win season. The two seniors finish their career with an impressive 84-69-1 overall record. They also helped Concordia to three MIAC tournament appearances.

DeNet ended the year with an overall average of .418. He became the first regular player at Concordia to finish with an average above .400 since MIAC MVP Derek Dormanen accomplished the feat in 2001. DeNet also led the team in stolen bases (6) and was second on the team in on-base percentage (.486), runs scored (27) and total bases. He hit safely in 28 of the 36 games he played in and had 18 multiple-hit games during the year. He led the MIAC in hitting in conference play this season. He finished league play with a .485 average which was 21 points above the next player. DeNet was named the MIAC Player of the Week on May 8.

Schumacher, an all-region performer in 2005, hit a solid .386 during the year. He led the MIAC in on-base percentage in conference games (.547) and was third in RBIs (21). Schumacher led Concordia in on-base percentage (.524), runs scored (33), total bases (66) and total plate appearances (147). He was also hit by a pitch on 12 occasions in 2006 and set a new school record for most times being hit by a pitch in a career (30). He appeared in every game for the Cobbers and hit safely in 28 games and had 13 multiple-hit games. He also fashioned a team-best, 12-game hitting streak during the year.
