Three Cobbers Named All-MIAC!

Complete List of 2006 MIAC Baseball Awards

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/08/06)--Three Concordia seniors were named to the MIAC All-Conference Team as announced by the league office on Monday. Infielders Billy DeNet (Eagan, Minn.) and Brian Schumacher (Thompson, N.D.) and pitcher Blake Trenbeath (Cavalier, N.D.) were all awarded First Team honors. It is the second consecutive season for Schumacher and DeNet to receive all-conference recognition. Trenbeath earns postseason honors for the first time in his career.

The three players helped Concordia post a 20-17 overall record, the 12th 20-win season in the past 24 years and fourth in the past five seasons. The Cobbers finished conference play with an 11-9 mark, the eighth consecutive 10-plus conference win season. The three seniors finish their career with an impressive 84-69-1 overall record. They also helped Concordia to three MIAC tournament appearances.

DeNet led the MIAC in hitting in conference play this season. He finished league play with a .485 average which was 21 points above the next player. He ended the year with an overall average of .418. He became the first regular player at Concordia to finish with an average above .400 since MIAC MVP Derek Dormanen accomplished the feat in 2001. DeNet also led the team in stolen bases (6) and was second on the team in on-base percentage (.486), runs scored (27) and total bases. He hit safely in 28 of the 36 games he played in and had 18 multiple-hit games during the year. DeNet was named the MIAC Player of the Week on May 8.

Schumacher, an all-region performer in 2005, hit a solid .386 during the year. He led the MIAC in on-base percentage in conference games (.547) and was third in RBIs (21). Schumacher led Concordia in on-base percentage (.524), runs scored (33), total bases (66) and total plate appearances (147). He was also hit by a pitch on 12 occasions in 2006 and set a new school record for most times being hit by a pitch in a career (30). He appeared in every game for the Cobbers and hit safely in 28 games and had 13 multiple-hit games. He also fashioned a team-best, 12-game hitting streak during the year.

Trenbeath was the ace of the Cobber staff in 2006. He finished the year with a 7-2 overall record and was 5-2 in conference play. His five league victories tied for the conference lead. He was also third in the MIAC in innings pitched (41.2) and fourth in the league in opposing batting average (.227). He collected a team-high 59.2 innings pitched and struck out a team-high 30 batters. He finished the year with a 3.02 ERA and had six complete games in his nine starts on the season.
