Gameday Recap MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/17/09)-- It started as a bright, sunny and warm spring day and ended as just another chilling early-winter afternoon. In that span, the Cobbers went from a promising team that was looking to make a charge to the top of the MIAC to one who will fight for its playoff life as they were swept 5-1, 9-2 against Macalester in Moorhead on Friday. Concordia was the victim of a pair of complete-game pitching performances from Macalester's top two pitchers. CC was also done in by the timely hitting of the Scot offense. In the first game Macalester scored four of their five runs with two outs in an inning. The two biggest shots came off the bat of Robert Williams who hit his first two collegiate home runs, went 3-for-3 and drove in three of the team's five runs. While Williams was responsible for the offense, junior pitcher James Murrey kept Concordia off balance with his control of the strike zone. Murrey allowed seven hits and struck out six but was able to get the key outs in the inning as CC went 1-for-6 with runner in scoring position. The second game was decided in the second inning when the Scots put up a touchdown on the Cobbers. Macalester scored seven runs on five singles and three walks. The nickel-and-dime inning took the life out of Concordia's split hopes and Scot starting pitcher Alex Ingram was able to play with at least a six-run cushion for the entire game. On the day Concordia had a total of 13 hits which is five fewer than they had in the second game against Hamline on Tuesday. Two of the Cobbers' three runs on the day came via the long ball. Adam Johnson knocked out his third home run of the year in the first game and battery mate Kyle Johnson hit a line drive shot in the second. For Johnson it was his league-leading sixth long ball of the year. Concordia now has 19 HR's in their 17 game on the year. The Cobbers will be looking to put an end to their two-game slide when they host NCAA Division I opponent UND on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 1 p.m.
