Gameday Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/29/08)-- The 2007-08 Concordia athletic calendar was started with a football win over NCAA Division II MSU Moorhead. The 2007-08 Cobber athletic calendar was capped off by a baseball win over NCAA Division I NDSU.

Concordia scored three runs in the first two innings and used a run-stopping defense to post a 4-2 win over the Bison on Tuesday in Moorhead. The Cobbers stranded 16 Bison runners on base and received four timely double plays to record their second win over an NCAA Division I team in program history. NDSU is in their first year as member of the Summit League - a Division I conference that includes Oral Roberts and Western Illinois.

The victory can also give Concordia "Six Degrees of Separation" to the No.1 spot in Division I baseball. Since Concordia beat NDSU and NDSU beat the University of Minnesota and the Gophers beat Pepperdine and Pepperdine beat Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Fullerton beat Arizona State and ASU beat Florida International and Florida International beat No.1-ranked Miami, the Cobbers can claim a "Six Degrees of Separation" win over the Hurricanes!

In the game on Tuesday, s
ix different Cobber pitchers took to the mound and all six were either freshmen or sophomores. The sextet held NDSU to only eight hits in the nine-inning game and left 16 runners stranded. CC received four crucial double plays, two of which were of the inning-ending variety and the final one ended the game in the top of the ninth inning.

Sophomore hurler Adam Johnson pitched the first two innings, did not allow a run and earned his fourth win of the season. He is now 4-0 on the year and has a team-leading ERA of 1.82. Freshman Phil Moenkedick pitched the final two innings and earned his first collegiate save.

Offensively, Concordia collected nine hits and had only two players with more than one hit in the game. Jake Krause went 2-for-4 and scored a run and shortstop Erick Sykora was 2-for-3 with a run scored. The biggest hit of the game came in the second inning when Cobber catcher Kyle Johnson singled to left field to drive in the eventual winning run. Besides the game-winning RBI, the hit also extended Johnson's school-record hitting streak to 20 games. He is the first player in program history to hit safely in 20 straight games.

Ben Mathiason pitched the first inning for the Bison and was saddled with his sixth loss of the season. NDSU also used six pitchers in the game. The most effective was hard-throwing lefthander Jake Laber who pitched 2.2 innings, allowed only one hit and struck out six.

Kyle Harrison was the only NDSU hitter with more than one hit in the game. He went 2-for-2 and collected the only Bison RBI in the contest. NDSU's top hitter Ryan Langlais was held without a hit and went 0-for-3 in the game. He had his 11-game hitting streak come to an end.

Concordia will finish off the 2008 season by playing at St. Mary's on Saturday, May 3 and then returning home to face St. Thomas on Monday, May 5 and Augsburg on Tuesday, May 6.
