Gameday Recap
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/16/08)--Concordia ran into a pair of wily lefthand pitchers and a red-hot leadoff batter and lost twice to Hamline on Wednesday in Moorhead. The Cobbers were outscored 11-5 in the opener and then droppeda 5-2 decision in the finale. The two losses drop the Cobbers' record to 10-9 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC. With the wins the Pipers are able to jump ahead of the Cobbers in the league standings. HU is now4-2 in the MIAC and 15-10 overall.
Hamline was able to use their No.1 and No.2 pitchers in the series and both lefties kept the Cobber bats from posting any big-run innings. They were aided by the bat of Dan Kaczrowski who was 6-for-9 on the day and had 15 total bases including two home runs in the second game.
In both games Hamline jumped to an early 1-0 lead and then used a big fifth inning to pull away from Concordia. In the opener, the Pipers led 2-0 heading into the fifth and then scored five runs to take a 7-0 lead. Concordia cut the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth frame on a Scott Schumacher two-run double, but then watched as Hamline recorded four runs in the top of the seventh to grab an 11-4 lead.
Hamline starting pitcher Dom Chenios went 6.2 innings and gave up five runs on nine hits. He was able to keep the Cobbers from stringing hits together and did not allow a run until his teammates had taken a 7-0 lead.
Schumacher led the Cobber offense in the opener. He went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. The only other CC player with more than one hit in the game was Adam Johnson who was also 2-for-3 and hit his first collegiate home run. Nick Lewis continued his hot streak. After going 4-for-6 in the second game against Macalester on Tuesday, Lewis went 1-for-3 and belted out his second home run of the season.
The second game was a much tighter affair. After Kaczowski started the game by belting a home run over the left field fence, the teams went scoreless until the bottom of the third when CC tied the game on a Kyle Johnson run-scoring single.
The lead would last until the top of the fifth when HU scored three times to take a 4-1 lead. The first of those runs came on Kaczrowski's second long ball of the day. The other blow in the inning was a two-run homer by Andrew Bennett.
The Cobbers got one run back in the bottom of the fifth but couldn't capatalize on a bases loaded situation with only one out. Hamline starter Josh Roiger was left in the game in the fifth and surviived the scare and went on to record the complete-gamne win.
Concordia outhit the Pipers 8-7 in the nightcap. CC starting pitcher Phil Moenkedick was hurt by the long ball. He went 4.0 innings and allowed five hits - three of which were home runs. On offense, Schumacher finished the day 4-for-7. He was 2-for-4 in the second game and upped his season average to .444. Kyle Johnson collected a hit in both games and upped his hitting streak to 13 games. Michael Carlson led the Cobbers in game 2. He was 3-for-4 and scored both of CC's runs.
Concordia will now play at St. John's on Saturday, Apr. 19 at 1 p.m. and then host St. Olaf on Sunday, Apr. 20 at 1 p.m.
