Gameday Recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/05/07)--Concordia capped off the 2007 season by dropping a pair of games to Hamline on Saturday at rain-soaked St. Anthony High School field in St. Anthony, Minn. The Cobbers lost a close, 3-2 decision in game 1 and then were overcome by seven errors in game 2 and fell 5-0.

The two losses ends the Cobbers' campaign with an 11-23 overall record and a 7-13 mark in the MIAC. The 13 losses in the conference is the most in the history of the program and it marks only the fourth time in the 29-year history of head coach Bucky Burgau that Concordia has finished below .500 in league play. Hamline finishes their season by upping their overall record to 22-18. They also bring their MIAC mark to the .500 level, ending the year at 10-10.

The first game featured an 1 1/2 hour rain delay in the fourth inning. At that point, Concordia had just tied the game at 2-2 on a Drew Zimmerman walk that forced in a run with the bases loaded. The Cobbers allowed Hamline to score a run in the bottom of the first inning before tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when Scott Halupzcok hit into a fielder's choice that scored Kyle Johnson from third base.

After the rain delay, CC wasn't able to do any more damage in the top of the fourth inning and then watched as the Pipers scored the eventual game-winner in the bottom half of the inning. In the final three innings of game 1, Concordia was only able to come up with one hit and had the final six hitters retired. CC did threaten in the top of the fifth. Jake Krause advanced to third base with two outs but was unable to come home with the game-tying run.

Krause finished the opener by going 1-for-4 and collecting one of the team's four hits in the game as the Cobbers were outhit 10-4. Matt Youngquist, Chris Klabo and Zach Johnson recorded the other CC base knocks. Klabo came up with the only Concordia extra-base hit of the game when he doubled in the second inning.

On the mound, freshman Adam Johnson pitched the first three innings but then had to leave the game due to the rain delay. He allowed two earned runs and struck out three. Darrin Carlson entered the game in the fourth and allowed one earned run in the final three innings and took the loss. He finished the season with a 2.92 ERA.

The second game was decided by the seven Cobber errors. Both teams had five hits in the game and neither team had an extra-base hit. The Pipers scored three unearned runs in the game to come away with the sweep.

Krause and fellow freshman Tyler Doll had two hits each as they combined for four of the team's five hits. Youngquist came away with the other base hit. Krause ended the day 3-for-7 and came close to raising his average to the .300 mark. He finished the year hitting .297 in overall games and .299 in conference play. He also hit safely in 13 of the team's final 14 games. Youngquist completed his breakout season at the plate by posting a .305 overall average and a .328 mark in the MIAC.

Freshman Eddie Massee started the game on the hill for CC and lasted 4.1 innings. He conceded five hits and only two earned runs. Junior Anthony Stearn cleaned up the final 1.2 innings by not allowing a hit or an earned run.
