MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (3/23/07)--Concordia rode the arm of sophomore pitcher Scott Schumacher and the bat of senior Chris Klabo to a 3-0 victory in the second game of their doubleheader against UW-Stout on Friday. The win helped the Cobbers pull out a split in their series against the Blue Devils and also snapped a seven-game losing streak for Concordia.
UW-Stout grabbed the win in the opener by scoring a pair of runs in the third inning and then one more in the seventh en route to a 3-1 victory.
The win in the second game moves CC's overall record to 2-8 on the year, while Stout stays even at 5-5.
The third inning would prove to be pivotal in the second game as well as Klabo laced a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall into the empty Metrodome seats. The three-run shot was all that the Cobbers would need as they went on to blank Stout and earn their first shutout since they beat Augsburg 7-0 last season. For Klabo it was his first home run of the season.
Schumacher mixed all of his pitches to keep the Blue Devils off stride all game long. He was able to spot his breaking pitches and shut down the explosive Stout attack. It was only the second time in three years that the Blue Devils have been shutout. Schumacher pitched six innings allowed only four hits, struck out five and allowed only two runners to advance past second base in the six innings.
Freshman Adam Johnson relieved Schumacher in the seventh inning and gave up a leadoff single before retiring the final three batters to earn his second save of the season.
Klabo was one of five Cobber players to post a single hit in the game as the two teams were deadlocked with five hits in the game.
In the opener, the Cobbers were done in by their inability to get a timely hit with runners in scoring position. CC was 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-4 with runners on third base.
Concordia outhit the Blue Devils 9-5 in the game and were led by freshman leadoff hitter Jake Krause who was 2-for-4 and scored the teams only run. Sophomore catcher Kyle Johnson was the only Concordia player with more than one hit in the game.
On the mound, senior Kevin Engebretson pitched 4.2 innings and gave up only three hits. He walked five batters and gave up two earned runs. Freshman Eddie Massee came on to pitch the final 2.1 innings and did not give up an earned run.
Concordia will stay in Minneapolis and play a doubleheader against nationally-ranked St. Scholastica on Saturday, Mar. 24 at 5 p.m.
