With the first fall sports contests just a few weeks away we want to bring you up to date on some outstanding accomplishments by our spring Cobber athletes and ouline some of the reasons we are so hopefull about the year ahead.
If positive momentum can be carried over from spring to fall, the Cobbers are in for a great fall season.

Coach Bucky Burgau's team finished third at the Midwest Regional May 20-22 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, ending the year with a 26-12 record.
Sophomore Chris Coste, from Fargo, was named the MIAC's baseball MVP and a second-team All-American. Coste was 5-1 on the mound in MIAC games, with a 3.08 ERA, and led the team in hitting with a .371 average.
Chris Marsden, another senior pitcher from Fargo, was named to the All-MIAC, second-team All-Region, and NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams after going 7-1 on the mound with a 2.10 ERA. Marsden also hit .312 as a starting infielder.
Gary Ullrich, a senior pitcher from Lake Park, was named All-MIAC and second-team All-Region with a 6-0 record and a league-leading .90 ERA.
Dan Holgate, a senior outfielder from Billings, Montana, was named Academic All-MIAC for the second consecutive year on the strength of his 3.45 GPA and a .306 batting average.
Cory Klinnert, a junior pitcher from Moorhead, was also named Academic All-MIAC. Klinnert was 4-2 on the mound with a 2.98 ERA and a 3.30 GPA.

Merrilee Rutherford (So., Helena, MT) won the MIAC javelin title and repeated as an All-American by placing 7th at the National Meet.
Eryn Anderson, a junior from Frazee, placed 8th in the discus at Nationals to also earn All-American honors.
Lydia Kabaka (Jr., St. Cloud) scored in four events at the MIAC, including a win in the triple jump and second in both the long jump and 100 hurdles.
The Cobber men's track team, finishing 6th in the MIAC, was led by two MIAC champions. Jason Trichler (Sr., Billings, MT) captured the league steeplechase crown and James Lehnhoff (Jr., Newburg, ND) won the MIAC javelin.
Ryan Beil, a junior from Valley City, North Dakota, earned All-MIAC track honors by placing third in the league 400 hurdles and was named Academic All-MIAC with his 3.84 GPA in Elementary Education.
Nancy Umland, a junior infielder from Brooklyn Park with a 3.74 GPA in Elementary Education, hit .362 to earn Academic All-MIAC and honorable mention All-MIAC honors.
Two outstanding yound pitchers, Stacey Hoien (Fr., Cokato, 10-4 record, 3.27 ERA) and Lynn Iverson (Fr., Northfield, 7-3, 2.94 ERA) should insure a bright future for Cobber softball.
A veteran football team, with All-American candidate Mike Jousma running behind an experienced offensive line, could be one of the MIAC favorites. Jousma, a senior halfback (Bigfork, MT), rushed for 1125 yards on last year's 7-2-1 team.
Important fottball schedule notes include Family Weekend September 25 against Hamline, Homecoming October 9 against St. Thomas, and season ending games against Augsburg in the Metrodome November 6 at noon and St. John's in the Fargodome November 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Cobber football and basketball games will again be carried on KQWB 1550 AM in Fargo-Moorhead with Larry Knutson doing the play-by-play announcing.
Mosser, from Fortuna, ND, earned his BS and MA from NDSU. He has long been active in area Junior Olympic programs and brings excellent experience and entusiasm to the position.
The Cobber volleyball home opener is September 4th vs UM-Morris at 2:00.
- Head womens' track and cross country coach Marion Strand will coach both the men's and women's cross country teams this fall. She is filling in for Mike Paul as the men's coach who resigned this spring to devote more time to his private business.
- Garrick Larson has been hired on a one-year appointment to succeed Mike Paul as men's track coach. Larson, 24, is a 1991 graduate of St. Olaf and has taught part time at Concordia-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota while working on his MA degree. Larson will also serve as an athletic trainer and teach in the Physical Education Department.
- Lisa Hanson will return to lead the women golfers in quest of a third straight MIAC title.
- Both the men's and women's soccer coaches are looking forward to continued improvement, with each ahving solid performers returning and expectations of important help this year from several highly-rated recruits.
- Six new members of the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted at a banquet at 5:30 on October 9. They are Lawrence Schneider (1938), Craig Hertsgaard (1943), Robert Laney (1968), Doug Boese (1977), Gary Samson (1977), and Nancy Halda (1982).
- Construction continues on the new Olson Sports and Fitness Forum, scheduled for opening in the fall of 1994. Summer rains have slowed construction, but it is fun to watch this building taking shape.
Summer has again gone by too fast, but we are looking forward to a very promising year for Cobber Athletics. Remember, you are an important cog in helping maintain a strong tradition - if you know of potential Cobbers, please let us know.
