11/05 Concordia Wins 3-1, Advances to Semifinals.
Concordia pulled off their second win over St. Ben's in less than a week and advanced to the semifinals in the MIAC playoff tournament. The Cobbers spotted the Blazers the opening game of the match and then proceeded to capture the next three to win 3-1 (24-30, 30-14, 30-18, 30-25). The victory gives the Cobbers 21 wins for the year, the most since the 1996 season when they finished with 25. Concordia will play St. Thomas on Friday, November 8th at 8:00 in the second MIAC semifinal match. St. Ben's grabbed the first game of the match 30-24, as they turned a close match at 21-20 into a six point victory. Alicia Pohlmann had two kills during the final nine points for St. Ben's and finished the game by serving an ace. Concordia finally settled down, and came out in the second game and scored eight of the first ten points. The Blazers would creep to within six at 18-12 before the Cobbers won 12 of the next 14 points. The late-game rally evened the match at 1-1 and set the tome for the rest of the evening. The Cobbers used the same story line to win game three - jump to an early lead, hold off St. Ben's in the middle of the game and then slam the door shut in the end. The result was a 30-18 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. In the final game, Concordia was able to pull away after the game was tied at 11-11. With the Blazers facing elimination, Concordia was able to take advantage of several St. Ben's errors and the attacking prowess of Jacki Barten (So., Melrose, Minn.). Barten finished the match with 16 kills. All four games featured multiple-hit rallies as both teams struggled to find their power hitting game. In the end, Concordia's Amy Fitzner (So., Valley City, N.Dak.) led all players with 17 kills in a match that featured 52 attack errors. St. Ben's had 31 errors over the four-game match. Assist leader Jessica Walden (So., Hawley, Minn.) continued to push her school record in assists to a new level. She finished the match with 47, giving her a season total of 1,221. The attack duo of Kristin Wolford and Shantelle Needham paced the offense for the Blazers. Wolford finished with a team-high 12 kills, while Needham added 11. Concordia improves to 21-8 on the year and will play at St. Thomas on Friday night in the MIAC semifinals. St. Ben's finishes their season with a 15-13 record. 11/04 Amy Fitzner & Jessica Walden Named MIAC Players of the Week. Amy Fitzner (So., Valley City, N.Dak.) and Jessica Walden (So., Hawley, Minn.) were named MIAC Volleyball Players of the Week. Fitzner was named hitter of the week and Walden was named setter of the week. Fitzner turned in a stellar match in a key win over St. Ben's last week. She had 22 kills (4.4 kpg), three blocks and 10 digs. She saved her best for last as she had kills in four of the last five points of the match. Walden also played a critical role in the playoff clinching win. She had 68 set assists (13.6 APG) which helped her surpass the school's all-time record for assists in a season. It is the second time this season that Walden has been awarded with player of the week honors. 10/30 Cobbers Edge St. Ben's in 5 Games, Earn MIAC Playoff Berth.
In a must-win match, Concordia went all the way to the wire before edging St. Ben's 3-2 (30-23, 26-30, 30-23, 20-30, 15-13). With the victory, the Cobbers earn a MIAC playoff berth, and finish tied for fourth at the end of regular season play in the MIAC. Concordia will host St. Ben's on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:30 in the play-in round of the MIAC playoffs. Concordia (7-4, 20-8) took an early lead in the match by sprinting out to a 30-23 win in the first game. The deciding moment in the opening game came with the Cobbers clinging to a slim 23-22 lead. Concordia rallied and proceeded to rattle off six straight points to put the match away and win by seven. In game two, St. Ben's (7-4, 15-12) methodically pulled away after the two teams were deadlocked at 20. The Blazers won ten of the last 16 points and evened the match at one game. Games three and four were a repeat of the first two as Concordia pulled away in the back half of game three to win 30-22, and St. Ben's had workman-like effort to win 30-20 in game four. In the fifth, and deciding, game the Cobbers had to rally from a 10-7 deficit to win 15-13. The teams were tied at 10 and then traded four points to set up a three-point showdown for a berth in the MIAC playoffs. With the score tied at 12, Jessica Walden (So., Hawley, Minn.) set up a pair of kills for teammate Amy Fitzner (So., Valley City, N.Dak.). St. Ben's saved one match-point when Kristin Wolford put down a pass from Beth Schiller to push the score to 14-13. The deciding point came off of a Blazer serve when the duo of Fitzner and Walden hooked up once more to finish off the game and push Concordia into the MIAC playoffs for the second straight season. Fitzner led all players with 22 kills, while Walden had a match-high 68 assists. The 68 assists for Walden is a career high, and pushes her season total to 1,174 which is a new school record for assists in a season. The old mark was 1,158 set by Meredith Berg in 1998. The tandem of Wolford and Alicia Pohlmann led the attack for the Blazers. Both players put down 14 kills. Schiller had 56 assists in the five-game match. 10/26 Cobbers Split Again on Day Two, Finish 2-2 at St. Ben's Tourney.
