In 1977 the MIAC changed its membership from the NAIA to NCAA Division III. Concordia also kept its membership in the NAIA until 1981. This was the year that Concordia won the NAIA national championship. Entry into the NCAA Division III brought some recruiting problems to the conference.
Under NAIA rules athletes were given special consideration in their financial aid package. NCAA Division III regulations mandated that athletes should be treated the same as other students in the student body.
