1972 Track
The 1972 track team was coached by Ed Langsdorf and had a relatively good year despite a last place finish in the conference. Concordia won its first team victory in many years outscoring Mayville State and Valley City in a triangular held at Valley City. Other team highlights included a second place finish at the NDSSS 6-team invitational and second place at the Gustie Relays.
“Concordia’s track team opened their season with a US Track and Field Federation Meet, which was held at NDSU’s new fieldhouse. The meet, which was attended by 29 colleges and universities from at least four states and Canada with over 400 athletes participating has become an annual event at NDSU. Laurie Anderson, a Concordia junior, put the Cobbers in the books as he captured fifth place in the long jump with a jump of 22' 11". Anderson’s performance, along with the performances of several other Cobbers, becomes almost remarkable when one realizes the difficult practice conditions at Concordia. Although one must, of course, deal with the reality of the situation, some better indoor athletic facilities would definitely be a great asset to Concordia College.”
Further results were:
Intercity Meet: 3rd place
Dragon Invitational: 3rd place out of 5 teams
UND Indoor Meet: 2nd place out of 3 teams
Bethel Relays: 7th place
The Cobber thinclads included Ed Deutschmann, Larry Lenyard, Darrel Smathers, Robin Foss, Ed Jones, Dave Larson, David Uhlir, Daryl Kosiak, Mike Grothem, Scott Van Orsdel, John Thigpen, Laurie Anderson, Doug Davis, Darrel Carstens, Dennis Frichtel, Jeff Smith, Mark Solyst, Ken Erickson, Dave Gabrielson, Craig Oien, Bruce Nick, Craig Shirley, and Don Brummond.
