vs. Royals Match Recap
Barten Blocks Bethel Into
Oblivion - Cobbers Run Win Streak to 14!
ST. PAUL-- Sometimes players
sneak up on records and barely ease past them as they try and stamp their
name on the record books. Then there are the times when a player simply
steamrolls right over the record and never looks back. The latter scenario
seems to be the case for Jacki Barten (Melrose, Minn.) as she prepares
to set a new school record for blocks in a career.
Barten had a season-high
nine blocks and helped Concordia sweep the Royals 30-28, 30-28 and 32-30.
She now has 449 career total blocks and needs only four more to break Laura
Reitmeier's ('99) record of 452.
The victory pushes the Cobbers
winning streak to 14 matches. Of those 14 wins, nine have been by three-game
sweeps. The Cobbers have swept their last three matches. Concordia improves
their conference record to 5-0 and overall mark to 14-1. Bethel, once a
perennial conference volleyball powerhouse, drops to 2-5 in the MIAC and
7-14 overall.
For the first time all season
Concordia finished with a lower attacking percentage than their opponent,
as the Cobbers' usual steady frontline had a hard time against the bethel
defense. For the match, Concordia had a .174 attack percentage, while Bethel
ended with a .178 attack rate. Concordia made up for their sporadic offense
by clamping down on defense. The team finished with a 21-7 edge in blocks.
Besides her nine blocks,
Barten finished with seven kills. Becca Shane (So., Detroit Lakes,
Minn.) had 13 kills for Concordia and Amy Fitzner (Sr., Valley City,
N.D.) chipped in 12 more. Jessica Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) added
36 assists to lead the Concordia offense. Sophomore defensive specialist
Emily
Gilbertson (So., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had a team-high 16
digs for the Cobbers.
Concordia will step away
from MIAC play to participate in the Minnesota/Iowa Border Battle Tournament
on October 8-9 at St. Thomas and Macalester. The tourney features four
of the top 25 teams in the nation from the MIAC and IIAC. The Cobbers will
play Simpson on October 8 at 4:00pm at St. Thomas, and then finish the
first day by taking on Loras at 8:00pm at St. Thomas. On Saturday, Concordia
will face #10 Central at 11:00am at St. Thomas. They will then wrap up
the tournament by playing Wartburg at 3:00pm at Macalester.
