Cobber Defense Gives St. Thomas Nothing, And They Like It.
ST.PAUL-- There's a line from the movie "Caddyshack" that goes, "you'll get nothing and like it." On Saturday, the Concordia defense gave the St. Thomas offense nothing - and the rest of the Cobbers liked it. The defensive unit held the Tommies to only 14 yards rushing, and gave up only three points, as Concordia quieted a jam-packed O'Shaughnessey Stadium and rolled to a 20-3 victory.

The victory keeps the Cobbers unbeaten on the season and starts their 2004 MIAC season off on the right foot. The Tommies, who beat Coe (Iowa) 21-12 in their opener, fall to 1-1 on the season and will have to wait another week before trying to christen their new field with a victory. Concordia has now beaten St. Thomas for three straight seasons.

Concordia's defense swarmed all over the St. Thomas rushing attack, and smothered any attempts to rack up yardage through the air. Tanner Radermacher (Jr., Bellingham, Minn./Ortonville HS), developing into one of the top defensive backs in the conference, had two interceptions and recovered a fumbled punt return. Josh Dietz (Sr., Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) led the Cobbers in tackles for the second straight game. Dietz had 11 tackles and one sack. 

The pair were a part of a defense that only allowed 181 total yards and amassed five sacks. In the first two games of 2004, Concordia has only allowed 10 points and is allowing a mere 51.6 yards per game on the ground. 

Offensively, Concordia put all the points they would need in the game on the board in the first quarter. After being stopped on their opening drive, the Cobbers marched 53 yards in eight plays on their second series and grabbed a 7-0 lead. Ed Oehlers (Sr., North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) scored the first of his two touchdowns on the day when he plowed over from 1-yard out. The big play was a 22-yard pass from Brian Schumacher to Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS) that spotted the ball on the Tommie 1-yard line.

After Radermacher picked off his first pass of the day on the fourth play of St. Thomas' next possession, Cobber starting quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D./Thompson HS) marched the offense down to the Tommies' 19-yard line. Kicker Brian Halverson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) converted the 36-yard field goal and pushed the score to 10-0 with 1:12 left in the opening quarter. 

The Cobbers second touchdown came with 7:07 left in the second quarter. Oehlers broke off a 23-yard run and scored his second touchdown of the day. The run capped a 12-play, 78-yard drive that was orchestrated by Jacob Odermann (Jr., Belfield, N.D./Dickinson Trinity HS). Odermann replaced Schumacher as the Cobbers' signal-caller with 1:38 left in the first quarter. 

After being held scoreless through the third quarter, the Cobbers put their final points on the board at 5:41 of the final quarter. Halverson knocked home a 24-yard field goal and settled the score at 20-3. For Halverson it was his 10th straight made field goal, which sets a new school record. He has now made five field goals in two games in 2004 and has accounted for 20 of the team's 50 points.

On the day, Concordia could only rack up 205 yards of total offense. Most of the damage was done on the ground. The Cobbers ground out 136 rushing yards. Oehlers had 12 carries for 51 yards and Travis Christensen (Battle Lake, Minn./Battle Lake HS) had 32 yards on nine carries. Passanante, the Cobbers' standout wide receiver, made only three receptions and was held to under 100 receiving yards for the first time in four games. His biggest impact in the game came on the punt return team. Passanante amassed 47 yards on three returns. His 32-yard return set up the Cobbers first score of the day. 

Shawn Reile (Sr., Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) also had three receptions and made a key catch in Concordia's drive for Halverson's first field goal. 

The second half was a showcase for the Cobber defense. After Odermann fumbled on the opening play of the second half, Concordia's defense stuffed the Tommie offense for four straight plays. Perhaps the key play of the game came on the fifth play of the quarter. St. Thomas elected not to kick a field goal and instead tried to gain a first down on a fourth-and-seven situation. On the play, the Cobber secondary blanketed the St. Thomas receivers and quarterback Ryan Jansen was forced to throw the ball incomplete.

For the remainder of the third quarter, the Concordia defense did not allow a first down and forced the Tommies to go "three and out" on three straight drives. The initial first down of the second half came on the third play of the final quarter. St. Thomas was held to only three first downs in the final 30 minutes of play. After receiving the ball on the Cobber 28-yard line at the start of the third quarter, St. Thomas only managed to cross midfield only two more times in the game.

Concordia will play at home for the first time in the 2004 season next weekend. The Cobbers will host Carleton on Saturday, September 25 at 1:00 at Jake Christiansen Stadium. The game will be apart of the annual Family Weekend celebration.
