(December 1, 2003)-- Concordia junior middle blocker Jacki Barten(Jr., Melrose, Minn./Melrose HS) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American Third Team. She becomes the first player in the history of the Cobber volleyball program earn All-American honors.
Barten was one of only three players to be named to the AVCA All-American teams. The St. Thomas tandem of Amie Aschenbeck and Jane Gibbs both earned All-American Second team honors. It is the second consecutive year that Gibbs has been named to the All-American Team.
Earlier, Barten was named to the AVCA Central Region First Team. She also earned MIAC All-Conference honors for the third year in a row.
The award caps off a banner year for the Cobbers. A year in which the team won the MIAC playoff championship for the first time in school history and advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since the 1996 season. The Cobbers also won their first round playoff game which was another first in program history. Concordia finished the season with a 26-8 record and an 8-3 mark in the MIAC. Concordia was the only school from the MIAC to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament, and finished the year with the third highest win total in school history.
Barten finished the regular season with
a team-high 452 kills, a .327 hitting percentage and 158 blocks. It is
the third straight year that she has led the Cobbers in both categories.
Her block total tied the school record for total blocks in a single season.
She earned All-MIAC honors for the third straight season. She was named
the MVP of the Saint Benedict Tournament and also helped push Concordia
to the brink of beating MIAC regular season champion St. Thomas. Barten
now has 1,040 career kills which places her fifth on the school's all-time
list. She also has amassed 381 blocks in her three years, which is second
on the school's all-time chart.
