Cobbers Fall to St. Thomas 1-0.

(Moorhead, Minn.)-- Despite playing their best game of the season, Concordia was unable to score a goal and fell to St. Thomas 1-0. The Tommies scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick mid way through the second half. With the loss, Concordia drops to 1-4-2 in MIAC play and 4-6-2 overall. St. Thomas remains in a tie for third place in the conference, upping their record to 5-2-0. They are 8-5-0 overall.
The Cobbers dominated the pace of play in the first play could not come up with the opening goal. The best chance of the half came off the foot of Sylvester Ndhlovu (So., Harare, Zimbabwe/HGIC HS) when he was played through the back of the St. Thomas defense. Ndhlovu hammered a shot, but it was right at Tommies netminder Orin Kipp as he was coming out to cut down the angle. Concordia also created several other chances off the run of play and almost came close from a corner kick but the St. Thomas defense was able to clear the ball away before it was struck on net from in close.
In the second half, St. Thomas was able to get through the midfield of Concordia and take several shots in the opening 15 minutes of play. The goal came after a St. Thomas attacker was brought down just inside the top of the penalty box. Adam Harding hit a low shot to the left of Cobber keeper Kris Overby (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS) to give the Tommies the lead at the 69:32 mark.
In the waning moments of the game Concordia was able to create two more chances but each time the ball was headed over the crossbar. On two separate corner kicks, a Cobber attacker found himself free of the St. Thomas defense but subsequent header was placed over the frame of the goal.
Overby made eight saves for the Cobbers, while Kipp turned away five shots for St. Thomas. The Tommies outshot Concordia 18-12 and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Concordia will fly to Colorado on Thursday
to play a pair of key regional games over the weekend. They will play at
Colorado College on Saturday, October 18 at 1:00pm and then travel across
town to take on NCAA Division II foe UC-Colorado Springs on Monday, October
20 at 3:00pm.
