Series Background:
|
| Last
year against the Knights, Cobber running back Bobby Clark scored three
rushing TD's in Concordia's 51-7 win. |
Concordia leads the overall series between
the two schools 16-5. Recently it has been all maroon and gold as the Cobbers
have taken the last 10 games in the series. The last time Concordia lost
to the Knights was in 1992 when Carleton pulled out a 26-24 victory in
Northfield. In the past five meetings between the teams, Concordia is averaging
37.4 points per game while allowing 9.6 points. The Cobbers have not scored
less than 28 points in the past 10 outings against the Knights.
Last year the Cobbers stormed from the
gates, racking up 34 first-quarter points on their way to a
51-7 victory over Carleton. The first
five Concordia drives netted touchdowns, each taking less than 1:30 off
the clock.
Bobby Clark put the first two scores on
the board, running in from 7 yards out with 13:31 left in the first
quarter, then running in another from 6 yards out with 10:02 remaining.
Then quarterback Ryan Hebrink got into the action, racing in from 18 yards
out with 7:53 to go, giving the Cobbers a 21-0 lead. With 6:29 left in
the first, Clark notched his third touchdown of the game on an 18 yard
scamper. With a 28-0 lead with less than 9 minutes gone by in the game,
the second string offense came in, and put up another first-quarter score,
a 5-yard run by quarterback Jacob Odermann. The second-string scored
again in the first half, this time on
a 9-yard run by Paul Nelson to give the Cobbers a 41-0 halftime lead.
The most points put up by Concordia in
a single game against Carleton is 55 which took place in 1994. The Cobbers
won that game 55-21, scoring 34 points in the second half. That game has
brotherly ties to this year's Concordia squad. In 1994, the Cobbers were
quarterbacked by Kyle Odermann whose two brothers play on this year's squad.
The elder Odermann rushed for three touchdowns in the 34-point blowout.
The Cobbers have only shutout the Knights
on one occasion. The only blanking came in 2001 when Concordia pulled off
a 35-0 victory.
The first game between the two school's
took place in 1921 when Carleton hammered the Cobbers 74-0.

The Record Book Watch
- Concordia quarterback Ryan Hebrink needs
855 more yards of total offense to break the all-time school record. The
current school record is held by Kyle Odermann who totaled 5,589 yards
from 1992-95. Hebrink entered the season with 4,124 yards of total offense
and has gained 610 yards in his first three games of the 2003 season.
- Hebrink's offensive backfield mate, Bobby
Clark, is also gaining on a chance to be included into the Cobber record
book. Entering the season Clark had rushed for 1,291 yards and needed 709
yards to become only the third player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a
career. In his first three games of the season, Clark has gained 281 yards
on the ground, leaving him 428 yards shy of joining the elite 2,000-yard
club.
