2002 Season Outlook and Notes:

Concordia is looking to continue their upward trend in men's soccer. After finishing 5th in the MIAC in 2000, the Cobbers climbed to fourth place in 2001. The 12 wins posted by the Cobbers in 2001 was their highest win total since the MIAC title season of 1996 ... To go along with their win total, the team also set a number of records on defense. The Cobbers set school records for most shutouts in a season (10) and fewest goals allowed in a season (8). They also posted a consecutive shutout string of 450 minutes which also set a school record ... The stingy defensive theme of 2001 should continue in 2002, as Concordia will return three of the four starting defenders and MIAC All-Conference goalkeeper Kris Overby ... Although the team lost their top three scorers from a year ago, they will have a solid core of offensive threats returning. Junior midfielders Jerry Nathan and Jason Van Valkenburg finished fourth and fifth in scoring last year. Nathan led the team in scoring as a first year player in 2000. He has amassed 26 points in his first two years in maroon and gold ... The Cobbers will play games in four different states and teams from six different states this season. They will open play with tournaments at Collegeville, MN, Decorah, IA and Bismarck, ND. The team will conclude their continental tour with a two-game swing in California during mid-semester break in October ... For the first time since the 1991 season, the Cobbers will play another Concordia school. The team will play Concordia University of Wisconsin in the St. John's tournament and then face Concordia University of Nebraska at the University of Mary tournament ... Concordia head coach Jim Cella needs only three more wins to join the 100-career win club. His overall record during his first 10 years is 97-64-10. He will become the 6th men's coach in MIAC history to accomplish this feat.
