Season Outlook and Notes:
Concordia is coming off a 9-15 season that showed steady improvement
from start to finish. Coach Duane Siverson will be looking for that trend
of improvement to continue in the 2000-2001 season. Although the
Cobbers lost leading scorer and All-MIAC performer Joe Ford (Grand Forks,
ND), there is reason for optimism in the Cobber camp. The team will return
the leading rebounder and second leading scorer from a year ago, as well
as the leading player in assists. Add to that several newcomers who will
add depth and additional scoring, and Concordia will be looking to make
a run at the new six-team MIAC playoff format this season. Junior Jeff
Ubben (Moorhead, MN) averaged 7.0 rebounds and 12.6 points as a sophomore
last year, and was voted to the All-MIAC Honorable Mention team. He finished
fifth in the league in rebounding with a 6.7 average, and his quick inside
step and tenacious demeanor will give Concordia a solid presence underneath.
Senior Nick Killoran (Buffalo, MN) averaged 2.7 assists in the MIAC
last year, seventh in the league, and will be back to help lead the backcourt.
Killoran, a three-year varsity starter, will team with spark plug Robb
Flint (Jr., Dilworth, MN) to help direct the Cobbers offense. Junior Mike
Syverson (Twin Valley, MN) was a bright spot last year coming onto
the squad and starting 22 games. He will give the team much needed help
on the defensive end.
Incoming players who will see playing time are local transfer students Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) and Stefan Swiat (Sr., Bullville, NY). Snowden transferred from North Dakota State University and Swiat crossed the street, coming over from MSU-Moorhead. Snowden will give the Cobbers an additional scoring threat and more depth along the perimeter, while Swiat will be used at several spots and will help take the pressure off of Ubben inside.
Highlights on the schedule include a season opening cross-town rival game with MSU-Moorhead, and a road trip to California to play in the University of Redlands Tournament.
An In-Depth Look at the Cobers for 2000-20001:
Inside: Jeff Ubben will be counted on to carry the load. His 12.6 point average should rise this season, and his team leading 7.0 rebounds per game will also have to improve if the Cobbers want to make the step to the next level. Transfer student Stefan Swiat will also find time inside and help Ubben give the Cobbers the physical presence in the paint.
Forwards: Mike Syverson and Chris Thomas will key the forward spots for Concordia. Swiat will also see time at the forward position allowing coach Siverson to give his offense a variety of options. Syverson started 22 of the 24 games last year and played a key role in Concordia's defensive scheme that held opponents to an average of under 70 points per game. Thomas saw limited time last year, but still finished third on the team in blocked shots. They will both be asked to step up their offensive output from a year ago that had them combine for 7.6 points per game and 4.8 rebounds.
Guards: Nick Killoran, Robb Flint and Joe Snowden will
be the mainstays at the guard spots. Killoran led the team in assists,
and has three years of MIAC experience. That seasoning will help him handle
the team early in the year when the Cobbers will be looking for a success
formula. Flint's high-energy play will help Concordia put pressure on the
opposing team's perimeter players and add a driving threat from the point.
Snowden brings the capability to put points on the board and relieve the
pressure on the scoring demands of the post players. Trent Hagen (So.,
Pelican Rapids, MN) will be asked to add depth and a spark off the bench.
