Season Outlook/Notes:

 Five returning starters. Six strong recruits. Thirteen victories in 1998-99, a school-record eleven of them in the MIAC. For the Carleton women's basketball team, the numbers add up to a problem it's never encountered before: high expectations.

 “It’s a great problem to have,” said head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, who directed Carleton to a 13-12 record last season, only the second winning season in program history. “Our strength is going to be as a team. As long as we play with that philosophy, I think we're going to see good things happen for us this year.”

 The season is already off to a strong start, as Metcalf-Filzen had her entire team at the first day of practice for the first time in her three-year tenure. In the past two years, players have been studying abroad or on leave when fall training began.

  "The work ethic, the intensity is already there," Metcalf-Filzen said. “They’re excited and ready to play — our practices have already been as intense as our games were last year.”

 Center Laurie Peterson (Sr./Freeborn, Minn.) will stand at the heart of the Knights' inside attack in 1999-2000. Peterson averaged 13.9 points per game and 7.5 rebounds in 19 contests in 1998-99, after missing the first six games of the season on an off-campus studies program in Spain. While Peterson was solid, Metcalf-Filzen said she never quite reached the level she displayed in 1997-98, when she averaged 16.0 points per game to earn All-MIAC honors.

 But Peterson will have plenty of returning help in the frontcourt this year; junior Bridget Seegers (Elkhorn, Wis.) quietly averaged 10 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season. Sophomore Renée Willette (Minneapolis) was nothing short of sensational in her debut season last year; she led the team in scoring (14.8 points per game), was named to the All-MIAC First Team and the MIAC All-First Year Team, and was selected by Columbus Multimedia as the Division III West Region Freshman of the Year.
 The backcourt is staffed by returning starters as well, in point guard Sara Tompkins (Jr./Adams, Minn.) and off-guard Lisa Cawley (Jr./Brooklyn Center, Minn.). Tompkins, who transferred last season from the University of South Dakota, led the Knights  from three-point distance, connecting on 36 percent of her attempts and averaging 12.8 points per game. Cawley, for her part, brings gritty consistency to the Knights; she averaged 4.4 points per contest, and was second on the team with 57 assists.
 Metcalf-Filzen said that having all five starters back  — along with key reserves Claire Lasher (Sr./Austin, Texas) and Kathleen Exel (Sr./Mound, Minn.) — should certainly aid the Knights in their quest to ascend the MIAC standings.

 “We’re really looking to our veterans for leadership, especially in the MIAC,” Metcalf-Filzen said. “They're responsible for this program seeing progress. I believe they're the ones that sold the program to the new players.”

 It’s those new players (six in total, two centers and four guards) who will give the Knights the luxury of depth in 1999-2000, both in the frontcourt and the backcourt. To make matters even better, two of those new players — guards Bethany Koehler and Cassie Glasrud — already have a year of collegiate expereience, as they are respectively transfers from a Division II program (the University of South Dakota) and a Division I program (Air Force Academy).

 Koehler (So./Superior, Wis.), like Tompkins the previous year, transfered to Carleton from South Dakota, where she led the Coyotes in three-point shooting in 1998-99. Her NCAA Division II experience will be invaluable to the Division III Knights, according to Metcalf-Filzen.

 “We're hoping that she's ready to step in very quickly and contribute,” Metcalf-Filzen said. Glasrud, for her part, was an all-state honorable-mention selection at Spring Grove (Minn.) High School whoe played junior varsity basketball at Division I Air Force Academy last season before transfering to Carleton.
 The two other guards, both Minnesota standouts, are Angie Grabowski (Fy./Maple Grove, Minn.), a player Metcalf-Filzen calls “exciting to watch,” and Cara Jones (Fy./Minneapolis), who will be able to fill several perimter slots.

 In the frontcourt, the Knights welcome centers Karen Fricke (Fy./Lincolnshire, Ill.) and Karissa Kramer (Fy./Clearwater, Minn.). Metcalf-Filzen describes the 6-foot Kramer as the “prototype five-player” who will be a force on the boards, while Fricke, a powerful 6-2 post player, also possesses the versatility to shoot well from the perimeter.

 With the talent in place, Metcalf-Filzen said the question now becomes how long it will take for the first-year players to adjust to her system and the intensity of the MIAC.
 “We've added the depth that has plagued us the last few years —in the past,  we haven't been able to sustain things through the course of the year, or even a game. I think we have that now,” Metcalf-Filzen said.

 And despite the fact that the MIAC — once again — appears loaded with talented teams, the Knights certainly are prepared for the rigors of the conference season.
 “We expect a lot out of ourselves this year,” Metcalf-Filzen concludes.
