Bucky Burgau retires as Moorhead Blues American Legion baseball coach after 27 years
Bucky Burgau, head coach of the Moorhead Blues American Legion baseball team since 1973, announced today that he is stepping down from that coaching position. He will continue as head coach for Concordia's baseball team, a position he has held since 1979. His record at Concordia is 409-296-5.
Burgau posted a 883-396 record in his 27 years with the Blues. His teams won 18 District Nine titles. His 1988 team also won State and Central Region titles on the way to a fourth place finish at the American Legion World Series.
"I'll always have a love affair for the Moorhead Blues and American Legion Baseball," Burgau said. "Back in 1973 I was going to use the the position as a stepping stone for my career. But it became a wonderful career in itself. I will carry with me countless fond and emotional memories from my years with the Blues. I will also cherish the long list of lifetime friendships I have developed through my involvement with legion baseball.
"My best memories are of our battles with coach Jerry Harter and his
Fargo Legion teams. The Blues traveled far and wide over the years
but our best competition seemed to always be just right across the river."
