Moorhead, Minn.-- Last year Concordia used the pink-colored cleats of Morgan Bain to post a record-setting number of conference wins and a berth in the MIAC tournament championship. Unfortunately for the rest of the conference, Bain is only a junior this season and has plenty more goals stored up in her fashion-conscious footwear.

On Saturday against Gustavus, Bain scored two goals in the first half to hand the Cobbers the game and help Concordia post a 3-0 win. The victory is the team’s fourth straight in 2005 and third consecutive over the Gusties. Concordia is now 2-0 in league play and 4-1 overall. Gustavus loses for the first time in the MIAC this season and drops to 1-1 and 3-3 overall.

Bain wasted little time in putting Concordia out in front. She hit an impossible angle shot that looped over Gustavus goalie Tori Boughton and into the net. Her tally at 5:27 was from one yard off the end line and was the type of goal that only a record-setting goal scorer could finish.

Bain finished off a more conventional scoring play when she scored mid way through the opening period. Fellow forward Kelly Ping took a throw-in from Suzy Grabko and served the ball in from the wing to find Bain in front of the goal for the score. It was Bain’s fifth goal of the season, tying her with Ping for the team lead.

Up two goals and in control of the game, the Cobbers tightened their defense and didn’t allow the Gusties multiple quality chances. Gustavus only managed three shots in the game, two in the first half and one in the second.

Grabko gave the Cobbers a comfortable three-goal lead when she scored at 76:51. It was Grabko’s first goal of the season and Concordia’s 13th in the past three games.

Concordia goalie Britt Reiersgord finished off the formalities by posting her second shutout of the season. Reiersgord made two saves to pick up her fourth collegiate victory. Boughton made three saves for Gustavus.

The Cobbers outshot the Gusties 11-3 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Concordia will step outside the MIAC to play Jamestown College (N.D.) on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 5:00pm at home. The next conference action for the Cobbers will be on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host St. Olaf at 1:30pm.
