Photos | Stats The win gives the Cobbers the championship of the Concordia Invitational Tournament and puts Concordia back on track heading into the MIAC conference opener on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Concordia also finishes the weekend by scoring 10 goals in two games against a pair of tough regional opponents. It is the first time since the 2000 season that Concordia has put together back-to-back, five-goal offensive productions. The Prairie Wolves were content to sit back early in the game and let Concordia control possession as they seemed worried about duplicating the nightmare that happened to Elmhurst on Friday when the Cobbers tagged the Bluejays for four goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. Nebraska Wesleyan’s tactics seemed even more brilliant when Sara Wulff scored the game’s first goal of the game at 10:48 to put the Prairie Wolves ahead 1-0. The Cobbers responded by scoring less than five minutes later. Amy Ravenhorst finished off a goalmouth scramble to tie the score at 1-1 and record her first goal of the year. After a Nebraska Wesleyan own goal at 36:55, Concordia defender Jill Fancher provided the highlight reel moment of the game. Fancher collected a clearing pass 30 yards out from goal, took one touch towards the middle of the field and sent a right footed, curling shot that hit the inside of the far post and ricocheted into the back of the net. For Fancher, it was her first collegiate goal. Nebraska Wesleyan closed the gap in the early stages of the second half. Wulff netted her second goal of the game and fourth of the year when she lofted a shot over Concordia goalie Britt Reiersgord. Like the Prairie Wolves lone goal in the first half, Concordia response was quick and very well executed. Junior defender Betsy Olesen restored the Cobber lead to two goals when she headed home a corner kick just 2:57 later. Olesen almost duplicated the feat later on when she hammered a header off the crossbar. The most technical goal of the game came at the 70:35 mark when Kelly Ping finished off a pass from Morgan Bain. The goal came at the tail end of a Cobber set piece from 20 yards in front of the Nebraska Wesleyan goal. It was Ping’s team-leading fourth goal of the season and fourth in the past two games. The Prairie Wolves finished the scoring with less than three minutes left in the game. Megan McCarville scored on a cross to push the final tally to 5-3. Concordia outshot Nebraska Wesleyan 21-11. The Cobbers have amassed 48 shots in the past two games, and appear to have broken out of the one-game slump at the start of the season. The Cobbers held a decided 13-3 edge in corner kicks. Reiersgord made two saves to pick up her second consecutive victory. Prairie Wolves goalkeeper Vicki Koke made nine stops in the losing effort. Concordia will open the 2005 MIAC season when they play at St. Thomas on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 4:00pm. |
