ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Concordia battled the third-ranked team in the country to the bitter end and came up short, losing to Macalester 1-0 in sudden death overtime in the MIAC Championship game in St. Paul, Minn.

The win gives the Scots the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs, and pushes the Cobbers into a 40-hour waiting period until the tournament bids are announced on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7:00am. Concordia stands a good chance of securing one of the at-large bids in the tournament because of the expansion tournament from 46 teams to 60.

The title contest was a tale of two halves. Macalester came out in the first 45 minutes and tried to put the game away early by duplicating their success during the regular season over Concordia.

The Cobbers were outshot 5-1 in the opening half and conceded a majority of the possession as they tried to get out of the period without giving up any goals.

After the break, Concordia found their legs, relaxed and started to combine on passes through the middle of the field. The new-found calmness helped the Cobbers post a decisive 7-4 edge in shots in the final period. The best chance for the Cobbers came when junior Amy Ravenhorst was sent free but just missed on the opportunity.

The game ended in a 0-0 tie and was destined for overtime. Like many overtime games, the tie was settled in the first five minutes of the extra periods. Macalester put the game away when they were awarded a corner kick and defender Cara Goff was able to put home a header off of a cross from Katie Pastorius.

Concordia freshman goalie Britt Reiersgord had her best game in maroon and gold. She routinely came out and stopped any Macalester chance from reaching the danger level by snagging crosses or cutting down through balls. Reiersgord also made a couple of outstanding saves during the course of regulation.

She finished the game with five saves.

Scot goalie Louisa Bigelow made four saves to pick up the win.

Macalester held an 11-8 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
