NORTHFIELD, Minn.-- In a game when Concordia was not at the top of its finishing capabilities, the Cobbers used an air-tight defense and just enough offense to beat Carleton 1-0 and extend its program-record winning streak to nine games. Concordia remains perfect in the MIAC with a record of 6-0-0. The Cobbers have now won 12 straight conference games, in a streak that dates back to Sept. 29, 2004. The other Concordia streak that stayed intact was the shutout string that Cobber keeper Britt Reiersgord and the entire Concordia defense has fashioned. The Cobbers have not been scored upon in four straight games. It has been 427:13 since Concordia has conceded a goal. It is the second longest shutout streak in program history. Two years ago, the Cobbers had a stretch of 492:55 without allowing a goal. Although Concordia was held to only one goal, the first time since the season opener, the game-winning goal was scored by the recent goal-scoring heroine. Amy Ravenhorst scored her third game-winning goal in as many games in the second half to give the Cobbers all the offense they would need. After playing a scoreless first half, Concordia received the game-winner just 4:57 into the second period. Ravenhorst finished off a pass from Rachel Lewis to record her fifth goal of the season. That equals her total from 2004 and is one goal shy of her career-best of six goals in 2003. The Cobbers had several other chances hit the goalpost and crossbar. Concordia outshot the Knights 10-2 in the second but had to clear a couple of Carleton chances late in the game. For the game, Concordia outshot the Knights 18-5 overall and 6-1 in shots on goal. Carleton held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Reiersgord turned aside the only shot on goal she faced. She also did a solid job of coming out to stop any balls played through the back of the Cobber defense. She has now recorded five shutouts on the season. Carleton goalie Yusi He made five saves and also did a terrific job in clearing away any dangerous balls that were played past the Carleton defense. Concordia will return home when they host Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3:00pm. |
