GAMEDAY BASICS
GAME TIME: Noon
SERIES: St. Mary’s leads 16-10-0
SERIES STARTED: 1984
LAST YEAR: Concordia traveled to Winona and came away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory. The Cobbers scored their lone goal of the game just over 10 minutes into the second half, and the revamped Concordia defense made it stand up as they conceded just four shots in the entire 90 minutes of play.
Amy Ravenhorst scored Concordia's only goal of the game when she netted her second goal of the season at 55:44. That would be the only goal of the game, as the Cardinals packed their goal area with defensive numbers and allowed the Cobbers to shoot from farther out. Concordia had a decided edge in shots for the game. The Cobbers outshot St. Mary's 27-4 overall and 20-3 on goal. Concordia goalie Ashley Liegakos made three saves to pick up her seventh win of the year and her sixth shutout. Cardinal keeper Jennifer Johnson turned aside 13 shots in the first half and six in the final period for a game total of 19.
SERIES HISTORY: Concordia has won the last six games in the series, and has shutout the Cardinals in the last three games. The last time that St. Mary’s came away with a win was back in 1998 when they won 2-1 in Moorhead. That was the final win of a streak that saw the Cardinals claim eight of nine games and 15 of 17...Concordia has won the last two games played at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex but has a 2-4 home record vs. St. Mary’s since 1990...the most goals scored by a team in a single game in the series is seven. The Cardinals beat the Cobbers 7-1 in 1995...there have been 11 shutouts in the series. St. Mary’s holds a 6-5 edge in that statistical category.
GAMEDAY KICKOFF
(What you need to know about today’s Concordia-St. Mary’s match-up)
-- Today’s game pits the most explosive offensive in the league against the stingiest defense in the MIAC. Concordia enters the game with league-best totals in goals scored (26), while the Cardinals have only allowed four goals.
-- Concordia set a program record by winning its seventh straight game on Wednesday. The Cobbers have not lost since the opening game of the season, and have outscored their opponents 26-6 during that time.
-- Cobber junior forward Morgan Bain needs only six points to reach the 100-point plateau in her career. Bain has 41 goals and 12 assists for 94 points in the first 46 games of her college career. That gives her an average of 2.04 points per game. If she continues at that pace, she would finish with around 149 points for her career.
-- Senior Kelly Ping has given the Cobbers a deadly two-headed offensive attack this season. She currently leads the team in scoring with 26 points (9 goals/8 assists). She leads the MIAC in points, points per game, assists and assists per game. She ranks fourth in the nation in assists per game and 20th in points per game.
-- Concordia’s seven-game winning streak is more impressive when put into perspective. It is mostly against MIAC opponents and includes a 2004 MIAC playoff team. The streak also includes a win over Nebraska Wesleyan which is the only loss for the Prairie Wolves this season (8-1).
-- St. Mary’s enters today’s game ranked 10th in the Central Region in the latest NSCAA poll. They mysteriously jumped over the Cobbers, yet lost one of their two games last week. Last week Concordia was ranked 10th and proceeded to win both of their games by a combined score of 7-1. This week Concordia is not in the top ten. (Things that make you go hmmmm....)
-- St. Mary’s started the season by winning its first eight games of the season. While on the surface this seems like a tremendous achievement, the Cardinals’ first eight opponents have a combined record of 20-38-3. They also won a pair of games against two opponents that are currently 0-14-0.
