SERIES: St. Olaf leads 17-8-2
SERIES STARTED: 1984
LAST YEAR: Concordia and St. Olaf staged two high-scoring, thrilling college soccer games last year. In the regular season game played in Northfield, the Cobbers scored early and then held on to win 4-2. In that game, Concordia broke on top 2-0 in the first three minutes of the game when Morgan Bain notched the first two of three goals in the game. The Oles got to within one just after half time, but then Bain finished off her hat trick at the 63:31 mark. St. Olaf scored at 70:12 to pull the margin back to one at 3-2. Rachel Lewis quickly restored the two-goal lead when she finished off the scoring 1:04 later. Concordia outshot St. Olaf 20-15.
In the MIAC semifinal game played at Concordia, the Cobbers once again raced to an early 2-0 lead. Unlike the first game, St. Olaf was able to come up with the game-tying goal. The Oles equalized just before the break. Bain then put Concordia up 3-2 at 66:36 when she scored her second of the game. The resilient Oles tied the game with 5:28 left when Kelsey Watt’s shot found the far side of the net. Neither team could score in the two overtime periods. In the penalty kick shootout, Cobber keepr Ashley Liegakos stopped St. Olaf’s fifth kick to give Concordia the win and send the Cobbers to the finals.
SERIES HISTORY: Concordia is unbeaten in their last three games against St. Olaf. The penalty kick win last year goes in the books as a tie, so the Cobbers are 2-0-1 against the Oles in the past two years. The last time St. Olaf beat Concordia was Sept. 28, 2002...The two teams are dead even in the last 11 games played at Jake Christiansen Stadium (5-5-1)...the two teams have combined for 19 goals in the past three meetings.
GameDay Kickoff
(What you need to know about today’s Concordia-St. Olaf match-up) -- Concordia enters today’s game on a five-game winning streak. The Cobbers are one win shy of tying the program’s all-time record for consecutive victories. The consecutive-victory record belongs to the 1999 squad. Last year Concordia won five straight and then lost their next game at the University of Chicago.
-- The Cobbers have outscored their opponents 20-5 in the past five games.
-- Today’s tilt begins a stretch of seven straight conference games for the Cobbers. The only non-conference games left on the schedule are in California against California Lutheran and Chapman.
-- Cobber senior Kelly Ping currently leads the MIAC in points (22), points per game (3.67), goals per game (1.33), assists (6) and assists per game (1.00).
-- Lost in all the scoring tales from Ping on Wednesday was sophomore Rachel Lewis’ three-assist effort. Lewis assisted on all three of Ping’s goals. She is currently tied for second on the team in assists (4) and tied for fifth in points.
-- After having a rough college debut, Concordia freshman goalie Britt Reiersgord has settled down and become an important factor in the Cobbers’ current winning streak. Against Jamestown on Wednesday, she made a stellar save on a breakaway late in the game. She has only given up one goal in the last two games.
-- St. Olaf enters the game today on the opposite end of a streak. The Oles have lost five straight and have not won a game since their season-opener against Martin Luther. St. Olaf is 0-2 in conference play, having lost by identical 2-0 scores to Augsburg and St. Ben’s.
-- A familiar threat to the Cobber defense returns in the threatening feet of St. Olaf junior Kelsey Watt. She has totaled nine points in her previous three games against Concordia. She scored the game-tying goal in the waning minutes of regulation in the playoff game last year. In her first two games in Moorhead, she has seven points. She leads the Oles in scoring in 2005.
