GAMEDAY BASICS
GAME TIME: 1:00 pm
SERIES: St. Ben’s leads 18-7-0
SERIES STARTED: 1984
LAST YEAR: Last year Concordia scored a goal in the final 10 minutes to come away with a 1-0 win in a game played in St. Joseph. The victory snapped a 16-game losing streak that the Cobbers had at the hands of the Blazers. Ellyn Roach hammered a low shot off the left post to finish off a nifty passing combination that started with Kelly Ping, went through Miriam Lombardozzi and culminated with Roach scoring the game-winner. The Blazers held a statistical advantage in shots (12-5) and corner kicks (8-1). Concordia goalie Ashley Liegakos finished the game with four saves to pick up her 13th win of the season and her ninth shutout. She finished the conference season with a 0.81 goals against average. Blazer keeper Amanda Broadbent made three saves in the losing effort.
SERIES HISTORY: The Concordia/St. Ben’s series has been a tale of two chapters with the Cobbers hoping to add a third. In the first part of the story, Concordia won six of the first eight games in the series. The second verse was all Blazers as they won 16 straight from 1989 through 2003. Last year’s victory by the Cobbers snapped the St. Ben’s streak and will hopefully propel Concordia into a string of their own...the teams have met one time in postseason play. That was back in 2003 when Concordia lost 2-0 in the conference semifinals at St. Ben’s. That game was played after a significant snowfall the night before...the last five games in the series have all been won with a shutout...the most goals in a single game in the series is seven. The Blazers beat the Cobbers 7-1 in 1991...Concordia is 2-9 against St. Ben’s at home in the series with the last home victory coming in 1986.
GAMEDAY KICKOFF
(What you need to know about today’s CC-CSB
match-up)
-- The Cobbers clinched a spot in the MIAC playoffs on Wednesday and can enter the MIAC tournament with either the #2 or #3 seed. If the Cobbers win or tie today, they will be the #2 seed and host either St. Thomas or Augsburg. A loss today would knock Concordia into the #3 seed and they would play at St. Ben’s on Tuesday in the MIAC semifinals.
-- Today’s game marks the final regular season appearance at home by the Cobbers’ lone senior Kelly Ping. Ping transferred to Concordia last year and has made a tremendous impact on the program. She has helped the Cobbers post back-to-back 13-win seasons and is one of the driving forces behind the team’s success in 2005. The entire Concordia College athletics department would like to thank Kelly for all her hard work and wish her well as she helps the team advance in the playoffs.
-- Ping currently leads the Cobbers in scoring with 12 goals and 11 assists for 35 points. She is two points clear of Morgan Bain heading into the final game of the regular season. A win today for the Cobbers and they will break the program record for most wins in a single season. Last year Concordia went 13-6-1 and advanced to the finals of the MIAC tournament.
-- St. Ben’s needs to win today to be assured of a spot in the playoffs. The Blazers could still back into the MIAC tournament if they lose and St. Thomas beats Augsburg. In that scenario, St. Ben’s would finish fourth and play at Macalester on Tuesday. If St. Ben’s beats the Cobbers, then the two teams will play in St. Joseph on Tuesday – déjà vu from 2003!
-- St. Ben’s is led by freshman Tina Lisk. Lisk has five goals and three assists for 13 points.
-- Another Blazer freshman is also making a splash. Annie Haws is tied for third on the team in scoring with five points. She also happens to be the daughter of St. John’s head coach Pat Haws, and the Gameday staff remembers when she was a little tike running around the Johnnie field on game day!!
