Gameday Game Recap

ELSAH, Ill. (10/22/10)-- Sam Johnson converted a penalty kick in the second half and the Concordia defense made it hold up as the Cobbers beat Principia (Ill.) 1-0 on Friday. The win is the fourth straight for CC and ups their overall record to 10-2-3 marking the eighth straight year that they have won at least 10 games.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Panthers and drops their season record to 11-5-0.

The two teams played through a scoreless first half with each squad getting three total shots. The Cobbers had the better of the chances in the first 45 minutes as they were able to get two shots on frame.

The game changed in the 56th minute when Johnson got played through the back of the Panther defense and was then tripped in the box. Johnson then converted the ensuing penalty kick to give the Cobbers the 1-0 lead. For Johnson it was her MIAC-leading 12th goal of the season. She now has 52 in her career and is seven away from tying the school's all-time goal record.

The following 34 minutes were played at a back and forth pace with each team having chances in the penalty area. In the end Concordia outshot Principia 7-6 in total shots and 5-2 in shots on goal.

Cobber goalie Ali Nelson made two saves and recorded her third straight shutout. She now has six on the season and 13 on her career. Panther keeper Mel Stein stopped four shots and was saddled with the loss.

Concordia will continue with their mid-semester break trip when they play at NCAA DIII runner-up last season Washington Univ. (Mo.) on Monday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.
