Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/16/10)-- It was only fitting that on the day the 10 Cobber seniors played their last regular-season home game, Concordia picked up a win that could best be described as typical Cobber "business as usual" soccer. CC scored a pair of goals by leading scorers Sarah Rounds and Sam Johnson and then completely shut down the St. Kate's offense and cruised to a 2-0 win.

The win is a fitting gift to the Tremendous 10, who have notched 37 conference wins in their three-plus seasons, as it all but locks up the Cobbers' eighth straight conference playoff appearance. Concordia is now 7-1-2 in the MIAC and tied for the points lead in the league standings. CC has 23 points in conference play and no team that has recorded 23 points in the league has ever missed the postseason tournament.

Concordia did all their damage in the middle of the first half. After taking the play to the Wildcat defense in the first 15 minutes of play and getting four shots, the Cobbers finally connected on their first goal when Rounds tapped home a rebound off of a shot from Sue Obermiller. Rounds' goal at 18:55 was her ninth of the year.

Johnson added the insurance goal 17:00 later. Obermiller played Johnson through the back of the St. Kate's defense and Johnson ran onto the ball for a breakaway. The Wildcat goalie tried to beat Johnson to the pass but Johnson was able to get there first and then tap the ball by the beaten keeper. She then slid the ball into the open net to finish off the passing play from Obermiller and Brittany Mayer.

The second half was played at a leisurely pace with the Cobber defense not allowing any quality chances. Concordia head coach Dan Weiler was able to play all 10 seniors and in the end CC was able to come away with the 2-0 victory.

The Cobbers outshot St. Kate's 11-3 including 9-1 in the decisive first half. CC goalie Ali Nelson had one save in the game to earn her sixth shutout of the year. Chelsea Jones-Thomas stopped six shots for the Wildcats.

Concordia will now head to Illinois and Missouri to play a pair of non-conference games over the annual mid-semester break. The Cobbers will play at Principia on Friday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. They will then face Washington Univ. on Monday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.
